A shady luthier?

Re: A shady luthier?

CL is loaded with Screw balls! Without word of mouth recommendation's I'd be weary of him. I cut my 1st nut at around 17 (with crude tools) and it was a disaster! Took me a few years & the right tools. And I still hate doing it! If he's only tweaking a pre-cut nut? $15 sounds appropriate. But cutting one from a bone blank takes some skills which would require some more $$. I would Quiz him extensively before letting touch my guitar.:naughty:

Re: A shady luthier?

IDK, I don't see anything wrong with charging $15 for the job. The only problem is how do you know his experience is legit.

Hopefully, one day I can go to a lutherie school and learn how to build/fix guitars professional. I want to do it because it's something that I would love to do. I'm not looking for lutherie to be my main source of income so my prices would be cheap. That and I wouldn't be renting out a space for a shop. Maybe, that's why his prices are low.

Oh and if I ever do go to a lutherie school, the only payment I would ask from a forum bro would be a beer (or case). :friday:

Re: A shady luthier?

It's a nut. You can stand there while he does it. If he screws up, don't pay him, and have someone else put it on. At least you'll have given him a chance. Maybe he's just doing it for suplemental income, and since he doesn't have the overhead of a shop, he can do things cheaper. Don't ever count out the little guy.

I say give him a chance. The worst he can do is screw up a $5 nut.

+1...ask if you can wait while he does the job.

Re: A shady luthier?

Ok. Someone lend me 90$ to go and put down to have a 2 inch piece of synthetic bone carved up...

He's not SLOTTING it exactly. Hell, the neck isn't even attached to the body yet. He's pre-slotting it, then i'm going to attach the neck, then he'll adjust the depth etc..not sure how much that'll cost.

Re: A shady luthier?

Don't worry guys, I made it ALL better. Instead of answering the ads of losers on CL, i posted one. So we'll see who answers. :)

Re: A shady luthier?

I charged 55 for an acoustic/gibson style nut. That includes new bone nut, setup, strings, and general cleaning. Depending on how kind the person was, I might do quite a bit more just for the hell of it.

65 for standard Fender style nuts, 75 for radiused bottom nuts.

Re: A shady luthier?

I tell you what Stale, you're worried about saving money and this that and the other, send it to me. I'll do the work for free, and then you'll have a great playing guitar that you don't have to worry about standing in some dude garage while he makes you a new nut and tells you it's correct because he learned how on the internet or some other dumbass ****.

Re: A shady luthier?

Yeah well the shipping back and forth would cost me about as much as a basic nut job. lol. Never fails....anyways, I appreciate the offer bean. I especially appreciate that you offer when you're going through such a hard time right now. Means alot.

The neck or the whole stinkin guitar?

You can't do a proper setup with just a neck

This makes perfect sense. Spend $60 to $90 on shipping a guitar for a $55 job........................

Not talking about just cutting the nut, but bolting it all together, doing all the final touches, wiring up the pickups if need be, installing what hardware might be left to install, all that good stuff.

Re: A shady luthier?

BTW: Unless he's building guitars as well, he's technically not a luthier.
