A2 mag swap in cheap pickups

I have some paf specd neck pickups in some of my guitars

Some are A5s and sound similar to the Jazz I love so much

One or two are ceramic, i cant hear much difference

I like the A2 Probuckers in my Epiphone Florentine

Would the cheaper off brand pickups benefit for a mag swap ?

I have some A2 and A5 magnets

Generally, yes, if the general EQ of the new magnet is closer to what you like. And it is cheap enough to try.

so If I have a similar wound pickup
with an A2 mag
It should be similar to an AP2

Well, there is more to a pickup's sound than just the DCR and magnet type, though.

a2 in a jazz is the aph1, yes. there are lots of pups with similar resistance readings, that doesnt mean they are all that similar sounding. many neck pups are in the mid 7k range and sound quite different

If you're just talking about how the pup sounds to you, then if it sounds like a Jazz and you replace the magnet with an A2, it will probably sound similar to an A2P (not AP2). But as has been said, there are other differences in pups that may have an influence on how a magnet swap would sound.

In a Jazz, putting an A2 mag in it WILL make it an A2P (APH-1). In a generic pup that "sounds similar to a Jazz", putting an A2 mag may make it sound similar to an A2P. It also may do some wonky stuff.

Regardless of the wind, the character difference between A5 and A2 remains.
Can't promise a great result in every case - as pointed out, there's a lot more going on.
Still, it should take your pickup in the general direction you're imagining.
And if not, you can always swap back.

Cheap pickups make great test beds for mag swap experimenting.

for the record, I did some mag swappings in some tonerider pickups and they sound really good
