A2 vs. A3?

I'm aware that the A2 and A3 magnets have a similar sound but how are they different? More or less bass for the A3? Are the mids similar?

Re: A2 vs. A3?

I don't think they sound similar at all. Warmer tone and more mids from the alnico 2. Brighter tone from the A3. Only compared them in a tele...not in a humbucker.

The only a3's I've compared to A2 and A5 are the A3 Fender Nocasters in my Custom Shop '53 Tele.

I didn't love them and replaced them with A2 Duncan Antiquitys.

Plenty of bass and treble from the A3 Nocasters...not enough mids for my tastes.

Re: A2 vs. A3?

I think A3 bars in humbuckers sound different compared to A3 rods in single coils. I've heard people call A3 single coil weak and brittle. A3 humbuckers sound warm to me, but not as warm as an A2.

I was wondering the exact same thing . . . anyone else tried them in the same pickup? I'm either going to be changing my C-5 to either a CC or a C-3, so yeah. Does the Custom sound good with an A3? From the little bit of research, I've heard its kind of mix between A2 and A5 (supposedly about a 70/30 mix). So yeah, comments?

I've done the CC, C5, C3 thing. The CC with an A3 sounds like a CC, but with slightly less mids and slightly more bass and treble. Also, the peak of the mids is moved slightly higher.

Here's Barlo's clips:

Re: A2 vs. A3?

I love A3 in darker toned guitars, gibby types have a bit to mud in the neck for my likes. The A3 made a huge difference in terms of clarity. It is brighter and lower output so as a result I don't like them in a Strat bridge ( the A2 is great there). I messed with this a few months ago and in my Hamer Explorer A3 were the only thing that pleased my ears. I tried a 5 and a 2 in the same pickups and neither worked in that guitar. It is worth messin with as any magnet change greatly effects the character of your tone.

If I were just going by those clips, I might be tempted to say I like the C3 better (it cuts a little better mostly). However, considering what I know about my guitar and amp (brighter than hell!), I think the CC is probably the way to go for me. I was just hoping to get a little more bass mostly. I'll probably order the A2 this weekend, so I'll let everyone know what I think of the CC vs C5. Thanks.
