A3 in a Pearly Gates: Discuss

Hey all,

My all time favourite pickups are the Ibanez Super 58’s in my 1981 AS-200. These must have been wound on a Wednesday right after lunch (my great grandfather would always check the door tag of a car to ensure it wasn’t assembled on a Monday or Friday and believed a Wednesday car was when the workers were the most involved). This set of Super 58’s are low 8K and A3.

The Pearly Gates in my 1994 Gibson Les Paul Standard is good, but still too strident and just not there with the Super 58s. Has anyone subbed A3s in a Pearly Gates? If so, what are the results like?

I've never tried A3 in a PG, but, from what I understand, you'll lose output and get more top end sparkle with A3 vs A2.

If you want a little less top end, try a 250k tone pot on the bridge pickup circuit, or 250k volume AND tone pots, depending on how much top end you want to chop.

A3 is the lowest power mag, but is somewhat warm and chewy by nature, only less so than A2. So the results in the bridge are that it knocks off a tad of output and sizzle, but that it still sounds bright and vintage. Pearlies come with A2 so going to A3 would be more of the same thing. If you want to knock down how strident it is, you have to go to a double thick magnet since A2 is by definition the warmest magnet. However a regular A6 could work.

Are you trying to convert us all to A6? Lol

Heh. Well there's already A2 in there which is the warmest mag, so the only real option is to go double thick!

I haven't tried it, but I imagine that if you think it's strident now, after you put an A3 in there it'll be worse.
