A4 vs UOA5 in Jazz neck pickup

I put a UOA5 magnet into my Jazz neck pickup & it sweetened it up some & helped with the bottom end.
I see Rumblebox likes an A4 in the Jazz. What is the effect of an A4 in a JazzN.
Likes/ dislikes?
Thanks!

I've had A2, A3, A4, A5, A8 and UOA5 mags in my Jazz set.

Every one has its particularities, but if you ask me, the stock mag for this set should be A2.

It brings to the forefront the sound of the wood the instrument is made of, never losing the articulation and the kinda sharp pick attack.

Jazz p'up: NOT for the sloppy player... ;)

put an A4 in a Jazz neck a few months ago. I also put A4s in my J/59n hybrids. I like it better than the stock A5.

it tightens up the lows a bit, so the playing on the lower part of the neck is more articulate. and it helps focus the highs so that playing on the higher part of the neck has a bit more cut.

the UOA5 might be a good baby step in between the stock A5 and the A4. it'll be like the stock A5, but with a touch of the warmth and dynamics of an A2.

it's just a few bucks either way.

The only problem with the UOA5 in the neck is the spongy quality of the lows that I really wished it didn't have.

The only p'up an UOA5 works great in the neck position is the Seth neck. All the others I've tried on I came to the conclusion there were better choices out there (A3 in the neck is the best mag to go wirh an UOA5 in the bridge).

agreed. that's also why I don't use the UOA5 in my neck pups. but I think it might be a little firmer in the lows than you give it credit for.... but that could very well be chalked up to different rigs and settings.

I've been skirting around the A3s so far. no application for what I've been using. but the polished A4 has really been floating my boat in many neck pups.

I've had an A3 '57 Classic neck / OUA5 '57 Classic Plus on my Gibson L-5 CES copy for almost a year with excellent results. The tone on the "both-on" setting is simply to die for.

I've recently changed'em with my A2 Jazz set, as they were "too rocky" for Classic Jazz Standards and Brazilian Jazz.

+1. Gibson should have put those magnets in '57's in the first place. Much better than A2's in both slots.
