Excuse me for not using the search function.Who is using or has used the 59/Custom hybrid with A5 mag? I`m assuming it would sound like a cross between the 59 and C5? Just curious since I`ve heard a lot about the C5 sounding mid scooped and wondering if A5 hybrid might be a happy medium between the 59 and C5.

Re: A5 59/Custom Hybrid

You pretty much hit the nail on the head... and if you need more mids, just change the A5 to an A2!

Re: A5 59/Custom Hybrid

That pretty much it. I prefer the A2 version myself

Re: A5 59/Custom Hybrid

I'd like to try the A8...but the custom/59 hybid I got is in my 7 string.

So I'm gonna have to wait a while till I got enough extra mony laying around for a custom order from allstar magnetics ;).

Re: A5 59/Custom Hybrid

I find it's really dependant on the natural tone of the specific guitar and more so the gauge of strings.
With heavy strings like I use(.012-.052) you have the strong bass and dynamic treble that is usually complemented by the softer A2 magnet... players of lighter strings would most likely prefer an A5 for the enhanced dynamics and response on the low and high end.
My guitars that are naturally warm sounding sound better with an A5... or if I want a BIGGER and more dynamic tone.

The best thing is that a magnet swap is so easy... you can fine tune with little effort.

Has Seymour, Evan, or anyone else from SD ever commented on the Hybrid pickups? I would be real curious as to their thoughts on the matter.

Re: A5 59/Custom Hybrid

I just did the swap from A2 to A5 in my PG/Custom hybrid last week. It's an interesting sound, but after a week of playing, I found myself missing the mids. Keep in mind, I play with heavy(.13-.56) strings, so like BachtoRock said, A2 is probably the better choice for me in the long run. The mag swap is very easy, so switching back will be like 15 min. work , tops.

Re: A5 59/Custom Hybrid

I currently tried out the A5 Custom Custom/59 Hybrid in my HSS Fender MIM Strat and it sounds to me alot like the guitar on Van Halens "Somebody get Me a Doctor" and also sounds close to the guitar rythm part for "Light Up the Sky". Good thing though is that it sounds articulate on all levels, and it sounds BIG with overdrive, I thought the A2 Custom Custom/59 sounded alot more even played Clean, actually sounded really good played clean whereas the A5 was maybe too strong for nice even clean tones. Everyones setup differs though.
