A5 to A2 change today, magnet orientation help, and pup bobin tape question

OK, I need to know what matters in the pickup magnet when swapping them out.
For example, imaging a pup magnet and looking at it as it would be in the pup, running with the Seymour Duncan logo laying flat, does it matter what end is top and which is bottom?

Also, am I correct that the polarity is (again looking at the pup magnet like it is in the pup) determined by which end is on the end closest to the S in Seymour and the second n in Duncan?

I just took the cover off of my pickup and I noticed that it has very little bobbin tape, could this be making it make the noise I hear with this pickup?

The polarity does not change as you go along its length. It's across the width. So the side closer to the slug coil will be opposite of the side on the screw coil. Take a look at this diagram.

I'm useing John's tutorial to do the swap (thanks!)http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/barmagswap.htm
And I'm wanting to know if there is a 'fail proof' way to make sure the magnet is right.

Also, I'm using this in a strat (C-5 to CC change). The only positions I'll be using are the humbucker by itself, the 4th (N+M), and the 5th . So, I'm not worried about it being in or out of phase with the others, I just want to make sure I have it in there so it will sound like it is ment to sound.

When you say length, you mean running parallel to the Seymour Duncan logo?

Just to make sure, it does matter how the magnet goes in, right? For instance, if you were using 1 humbucker as the only pickup in a guitar, does it matter how the magnet goes in?

Yes, I mean that they are parallel to the logo, if you want to phrase it that way. In other words, the whole side of the magnet that's by the SD logo would be one polarity, while the side farther from the logo is the opposite polarity.

But if I understand correctly, you'll only be using the humbucker by itself, and series mode. That means it shouldn't matter how you stick the magnet it.

Humbuckers work whatever the polarity is. The only thing with the polarity is that it can get screwy when you combine with other pups and with different kinds of wiring mods; that's when you need to be aware of the polarity.

You can get a polarity tester at www.stewmac.com.

Very simple device and is foolproof.
