A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

It seems that people like the tone in a JB better with an A2.

I'm looking to put this in a maple body. I've got an MJ wound JB. Looking for a warm sound but something that will still growl/punch rythm wise and cut through nice on leads.

I've heard JB's sound good in solid maple. Should I just leave this thing alone or change the mag. to an A5. Opinions?

Also, are there any good tutorials on changing magnets if I choose to do so?

Re: A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

I wouldn't recommend putting an A5 JB in a maple body, it might be too bright. A2 would be better, IMO.

Re: A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

If you have an older A2 JB, then just leave it alone. I am sure you can find someone to swap you if you want an A5.

Re: A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

Just curious - does SD still make JB's with A2 through their custom shop? It doesn't seem to be a choice in their regular lineup. A5 JB only.

peace

Thanks for the tutorial!

Aytron, refer the "Any Duncans that have aged nicely ?" thread today. Everyone was talking about older JB's having the A2's. Then an administrator, VP of Marketing for Seymour chimed in and said that JB's are all A5. I found it interested, might want to check it out.

True dat, Laney. The pickup is called the Bug-Sey 'Bucker. In an earlier post on this subject, there was a misunderstanding that the old JBs were made with Alnico 2 magnets. They never were.

But if you order a Bug-Sey 'Bucker from the Custom Shop (originally designed for Bugs Henderson), that's what you'll be getting.

Now, what's this about the e-mail I received today from a Nigerian businessman who has $5-bazillion locked up in a bank account and all I gotta do is pay him $50 grand and I get half???

You gotta love the Internet.

No, but I stand corrected. I had read the same thing about older JBs having the A2 mag. Oh well, that is what you get for believing the internet. :D

Re: A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

Evan, too funny and so true....Internet just cracks me up sometimes.

Anyways, am I reading this correct? If I'm looking for a JB with an A2, I should just buy a
Bug-Sey 'Bucker............Meaning that this the Bug-Sey is a JB with an A2 verse and A5?

That would be easier than risking ruining a perfectly fine JB.

Re: A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

You won't ruin anything, honestly. You'd have to intend to screw it up. It'd be WAY more cost effective to just swap the mag, its super easy to do.

Re: A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

Hmmmm.........so if the bug-sey is an A2 jb would the Demartini be similar?? My understanding was it is based on an A2 equipped jb as well.

Re: A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

The DeMartini is hotter than a JB. The reason you might be connecting it with a JB is that Warren played JBs before we designed this pickup for him. But it's not a JB.

Don't knock it till you try it. Go play a mid 80's Kramer and then come back and make that suggestion. I don't think you'll be able to.

Re: A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

There was also a thread awhile back where a forum bro called MJ about the A2 swap in a JB and it was said that Seymour himself uses an A2 in his JB or something along those lines.

Re: A5 Vs. A2 in a JB

i'm starting the like the JB a lot in my Epi SG... great for Nirvana tunes like Aneurysm :)

What people are these? Maybe you should've said "some" people, since I still prefer mine A5 :p

EDIT: just noticed that you had a question about a JB in solid maple guitars. I had such a guitar, and to me it sounded like an ice pick. Granted, you can EQ your amp to compensate, sure, but I actually liked the Custom Custom better in solid maple (even though the combination of soft maple with a flabby bottom and the Custom Custom was not as good).

Yeah, I had that conversation with MJ and I heard what Seymour had said. However after being "pimp slapped" by Evan (just kidding Evan, please don't hit me again :eek1:), I guess what Seymour meant was that he was playing a "Bugs-Sey" pickup from the custom shop.

Thanks for the info Evan! I've got a Demartini on order; can't wait to try it out
