About cheap SS amps vs. Tubes

why buy an amp that you have to spend hours with to find a good tone? shouldnt it just sound awesome from the go?
If this was pointed towards my TSL comment, then I have to say, it does sound awesome in most cases... there are just so many possibilities to suit it for different styles... it's not a one genre amp

To each his own guys, the DSL really doesn't handle extremely high gain stuff very well.
Of course not. It's a marshall - you would need a pedal infront of it for "extreme high gain".

Or an EQ pedal in the effects loop. Lots of DSL owners use that trick to play uber hi gain metal with these amps.

no, i mean in general.

people say, its such a hard amp to tweak right and it takes a long time to get the settings right, why bother then? get something that doesnt have as many knobs.

EQ, gain and volume is all i need

Yeah...but some amps like Boogies either have sooooo many options or have such crazy EQ voicings that it takes a while to dial them in. Some amps that sound killer from the start just do that ONE thing (Plexis!) but it's amazing.

Years ago I had a '95 100 watt Dual Rectumfryer which was pretty simple for Boogie & while you could plug & play the amp could do A LOT depending on how the channels & stuff were configured. Something like a Roadking IMO, just has toooo many options.

I dig amps that live somewhere between the two extremes.

As for cost...sure, $500 is a lot of money...but I can't remember the last time I spent $500 or less on anything other then stompboxes & cableage type stuff. I've rarely been all that happy with the cheaper stuff...I'd rather go without & save for a longer period of time & get EXACTLY what I want rather then settling because its all I could/can afford to spend.

But if you're like me, you don't want an amp that just handles one thing... and as I've said before the TSL can do about everything, even high gain metal (because of the Lead channel, which the DSLs lack) and the many knobs can take you there if you know how to use em.
