? about Full Shred

I just can't decide whether I like this pickup or not :smack: At First I really loved the Rythm sound, it's tight and chunky, but lately I 've been into a lot of Van Halen stuff and it seems like this pickup blows for getting pinch and Tap harmonics.

It seem to add a lot of gain and make things sound overdriven, but it's not the kind of overdrive that is giving me the above mentioned stuff, it's almost like its' a low gain pickup.

Is it me or am I just using the wrong pickup for what I want. I had a Dimarzio Super distortion in the guitar and it was blazing, just had a bit too much top end, then I had a Custom Custom and it seemed just a bit too mid rangy for me.

I kind of want the Van Halen tone from The Right Here Right Now Live album, and was told that the closet thing that would be a Tone Zone and an Air Norton is this accurate?

Well, the Full Shred isn't for everyone, and it certainly doesn't embrace Van Halen tones as do the DiMarzio pups that you mentioned. With a Duncan equivalent, you might think about a Screamin' Demon or even a '59. You won't get a lot of gain out of the pickup, but that's what the amp is for, right? EVH, as far as I can tell, never used terribly high powered pickups, but there's so much of his tone that was just in his hands.

Problems getting pinch harmonics with the full shred?
I have had that pickup in a number of guitars and in my experience, it gets them easier than almost every pickup I have tried.

Don't know about the Dimarzio questin but you should look into a Custom if the CC was too Midrangey and the SD had too much high end. The Custom would send you in the right direction. I haven't used a full shred so I can't make any intelligent comments about it.

I have the AirNorton in my LP and had it in my Ibanez RG.
I like the clean sound, I like the tight rythm sounds, but the harmonics are not the best. It has some, but not as strong as I'd like it...

TheProphet will send me the slips he recorded with his full shred set as i'm interested in the pups. as far as i recall they're in various conditions (clean, dirty, distorted).
when i get them i'll upload them for a brief time so you peeps can download it and get some ideas about it

In my opinion the FS sounds like a high-gain pickup compressed into a moderate-output-pickup.

Could it be the guitar that the FS is in? I have it in a poplar body.


Or, Could it be that the pickup is about 20 years old? I don't know if pup's lose anything over the years, but this was an original FS that came out of a Kramer Nightswan from the 80's.


In all honesty , for all I know it may not be Full Shred, BUT as I said it came out of a Night Swan and it has FS at the end of the numer on the back of it.

I have used the full shed in many guitars all with great results. I have even used it in a laminated body Kramer copy guitar with great results in tone.

There just might be a little tapping and harmonics work there as well

i prefer the FS in the neck for high gain, single note definition. the bridge version is an acquired taste...

The other Thing is, I don't use the highe gain channel on my amp, I just don't like it so maybe that is why I m having the issues, It's all my Fault

I tend to use vintage style gain when using the Full Shred.

Hopefully if the clips to davey work out, you'll hear me butcher some early VH using a Dumble'esque setting on my Line 6. I may do some more recordings later on of all the pickups.

But the Full Shred is not good at getting the early Van Halen sound ... It does a fair job at stuff from Balance tho

to be honest...i found that pickups mean little when getting harmonics. i played a '71 strat through a mesa mark IV and ud be hard pressed to find a setup that popped harmonics more easily. i also played a g&l through a carr mercury and the harmonics were jumpin out. its so much more in the amp that im not interested in switching pickups unless they make an amp sound worse.

Agreed. For me it seems more a question of where the pickup is located along the string length than the actual type of pickup. The amp is what creates the gain, anyway.

Ok since Davey hasn't gotten around to posting the soundclip I recorded, I removed the copyrighted material from it (VH - Ain't Talking 'bout Love riff and Pantera's Heresy intro (harmonic runs)) and revived my soundclick account which has another Full Shred sample ... there's similar riffs and runs on both.

But the 2nd sample is the one that was recorded to get a better feel, and some of it was recorded for this thread
