About Picks and Pick Scrapes

Hey guys,

right now im using jim dunlop nylons .73mm. I think they are the pefect pick for be, and they have a ncie soft feel i could never get with any tortex i have used. My only problem, pick scrapes seem to decimate this pick. The leave grooves all over the sides of the pick. What picks do you guys have and do they stand up to scrapes very well? I read on the dunlop site those ultex picks hold up to pick scrapes very well.

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

Nylons are way to soft imo and pretty much any otha typa pic stands up to that kinda damage better then nylons. I use Dunlop Tortex 1mm picks at the moment and you couldnt put a dent in em unless u get some sorta tool and delibrately tried to damage it.

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

try going with a lighter tortex. Pretty much all tortex's are indestructable, i've bever ever broken one. But, they are harder than other picks, so yeah, go down a size. You prolly won't be able to notice a difference, the oranges should work perfect

I use the orange ones currently and they are so far from undestructable, I've broke three and shredded 5 in the last two weeks.

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

Wow your broke a pick? how does that even work? Like snapped it in half? and shredded? How bad are we talking here? I dont play that hard, only those pick scrapes leave grooves throughout the side of the pick. While on the subject of nylon picks, i think Jimmy PAge uses herco flex 75 picks, which if im not mistaken are nylon as well.

Ya i have noticed that tortex are alot harder in terms of material. The .60mm is in fact harder and more stiff/snappier than the softer .73mm nylon.

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

I use Dunlop Gator Grips 0.93mm. They hold up well. I wear grooves into one side and that really enhances pick scrapes.

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

Jazz III Black Stiffo's...Indestructable. Sortof.

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

Cool thanks rain maker. BUt one questions. how are the ehrco nylons like? What does the herco 50 and 75 mean? does that mean the gauge? ie: herco 75 = a .75mm nylon pick?

wow, that right there scares me

I had one of the lightest gauge tortex's for 3 months & it never broke. I just lost it

fender picks on the other hand, well, i'd go thru like 3 of those a day

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

Actually i used to use ornage tortex's for along time and i have some ornage tortex's thata re worn out to a stub, and i really mean stubb! There is no tip at all. LIke it looks liek a thumb now. The nylons seem to be holding out well to strumming, but its the pick scraped that rape them. Maybe because my strumming has died down int erms of the power i use, i used to hit really really hard back in the day.

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

yeah, i never saw any signs of wear on the tortex ones i used... before i lost em :( they have a turtle on the side, don't they?

the tortex ones laugh in the face of pickscrapes lol - most of the nylon ones should be fine for scraping..

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

The nylons will wear grooves instantly no doubt. Unless you are really grinding the tortex it'll take a bit to wear grooves into the side.

I use the orange and I wear the tips right off but I have rarely grooved the sides.

I have tortex picks that I've used for like 2 years (at least), I never wear them out...
I used the green tortex picks and they show NO signs of wear. I used TNT strings and pick/strum/pick slide pretty enthusiastically.

Re: About Picks and Pick Scrapes

I use the dunlop nylons... .60mm

I do a lot of pic slides and they seem to hold up pretty well

Yeah, and a few snapped into three... must be the cold winter air :laugh2:

(shredded) It's not overly bad, but bad enough to piss me off.
