Anyone here have used it or better yet, own it (particularly the older model made in usa)? I'm thinking of buying one for my jazz rig and am just wondering how well do they sound. If i still feel contempt in purchasing one, ill probably buy one off of ebay.

Go for the Bandit 112S. It was the second version, with the Sheffield speaker.

I had one for several years, and sold it to ranger1bn75inf. He is rather fond of it as well.

It is a really good amp for the price and features.

Re: About the Peavey Bandit 112

I knew some skater-punk stoner kids in high school who said a Peavey Bandit was the best amp for hardcore thrash metal and punk rock. Dunno if that's what you want for your jazz rig, but they had really bad tone.

Re: About the Peavey Bandit 112

back in the 80's the Bandit amps were everywhere... i never owned one but i have played thru them... loud amps! not bad for the low bucks...

Re: About the Peavey Bandit 112

I use to have one (gave it to my brother). I didn't care for the overdrive on the amp but I thought the clean channel had a very good sound to it.

Re: About the Peavey Bandit 112

Thanks for the input guys. I want it specifically for the clean sound, but im still conteplating about either getting a cube or a used fender amp (although im not a huge fan of clean sound from tubes for jazz). Polytone is mostly out of the question because the tone from those amps seem too dark.

Re: About the Peavey Bandit 112

Used Bandits go cheap and are easy to find. Find one with the Sheffield speaker and transtube vs. the older SuperSat pre-amp. I have an older one to kick around (SuperSat and Scorpion speaker), the cleans are fairly dark and fat, sounds like it would work well enough for jazz.

Hey Lettuce!

Look around, those were really common "back in the day." They were popular amps- they were inexpensive AND durable. Some people got great sounds out of them- some got a great start out on them. I remember one of my favorite albums was recorded on a Bandit- the Chicago band The Phantom Helmsmen...

It's not so much a tone I'd shoot for, but it does what it does.

Re: About the Peavey Bandit 112

These were sooo popular around here for everyone on the budget. I mean, the pawn shops are still crammed with 'em.

I'm not fond of them though. They sound ok with pedals (not much more than ok IMHO) but the cleans are definitely useable. You should be able to get the older ones (with sheffield as suggested) for little dough.
