About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

This has been completed about a month ago... I got busy afterwards so here it is.

Kit from 3g music and sound. Basswood body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard.

I wanted it much darker than it came out but I sanded the body much too fine for the stain to really get in there as needed. Still looks nice.
3-piece body, I assume most folks would end-up using solid colors but I wanted to "show" the different pieces and grain. It's supposed to be a garage-guitar and I like that.
Made the pickguard, control-cavity-plate and jack input plate from a sheet of scrap metal I had in the garage.
Made the truss-rod cover from an old piece of cymbal my former drummer left around.
The neck plate is from an old lawnmower blade thingy that was found in the toolshed. Had to work it a lot 'cause it's THICK (and effin' heavy)... I like how it came out. Notice the beveled edges I had to work and the recess for the screw-heads (huh huh).
Everything else is stock from the kit, except the pick-ups, which are duncans (alt-8 bridge, '59 neck).
The gold hardware is kinda weird with the scrap metal look but at least I sanded it to take the shine off of it.

Only bad thing I have to say about the kit: the neck-body angle isn't steep enough, therefore, the bridge has to be screwed all the way down to have the strings adjusted correctly. I made a great set-up and it plays amazingly but just a bit more and it wasn't good enough so...
Otherwise, the rosewood is really nice and the fretwork is perfect. As I was with the tele kit, the necks that come with these kits are very very nice considering the price and pretty much worth the price of the kits by themselves.

That thing is HEAVY but plays great and sounds really good. Pretty cool guitar to have around....

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

Very rustic looking. I like it. My only gripe is the pickguard doesn't go right up to the fretboard.

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

Thanks man. I copied the pickguard that came with the kit and didn't look how others were done. I'll make a note for next time...

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

Something about it looks a lil off, but I dig the overall aesthetic. Nice job!

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

You may need to add a small shim to get a bit more angle on the neck ,pretty standard set up stuff - you could even use a bit of that sheetsteel :)
I like your heavy duty neck plate too

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

I know about the shim and was about to do it but since it worked out without it I'll keep it as is.

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

looks pretty nice dude congrats.

The string spacing looks WHACK though... the low strings are closer to each other than the higher strings are ...or is that just an illusion in the truss rod cover close up?

Also, the shaping of the nut is....nonexistent. Strings shouldn't be sunk that deep into the nut.

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

Man, that looks awesome. I really dig the "scrap metal" bits, with the grain, and the gold hardware. And the branding on the headstock? That is groovy as ****, and really original to boot. An also, despite being a three piece body, id say a trans finish was a great choice. Looks great.
Im not even a pointy fan, but, I really dig that guitar, good job!

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

Looks pretty cool to me, just sand down the top of the nut some. And hella +1 on the shim.

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

Thanks guys.
String spacing: it's all good, just an illusion, checked it with my string-spacing rule.
Nut: pics were taken before I shaped the nut. I'm gonna put a nice bone nut there eventually but since I don't have time to start from scratch with a blank right now, the stock cheapie went in temporarily.
Shim: same thing. For now this doesn't stand in the way of the axe bein set-up the way I like and I want to make a nice shim that won't allow any gaps between the neck and body to allow good coupling... All in good time.

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

cool man. What's the logo? (looks neat, I just can't tell what it is)

Re: About time I did this: Explorer kit build thread

It's a crow inside a circle. My first kit was also built with scrap metal so I decided to call my "company" scavenger guitars (crows are scavengers... Hence the logo).
Can't blame you for not bein able to make it out, it didn't come out that great...
