Diminished Triad

Building a Warmoth Les Paul-like guitar, mahogany body with maple top, maple neck with rosewood fretboard. Looking for two humbuckers most able to give a George Benson style of jazz sound/tone.
Thanks for any info or experience you can share!

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

One of the finest jazz pickups I've ever heard, (live), was from a guy who opened for a Tommy Emmanuel show. He was playing a Benedetto guitar, with Benedetto A6's in it. These are made by Seymour Duncan. If you go to SD's humbucker page, they're on page 2. Benedetto A6's. Suweeeet! ;)

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

I have a SD Jazz in a mahogany body. I have a Berklee piano player buddy who is beyond a tone snob and he says it is the best sounding guitar tone he has heard.

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

What is the budget?

I am tempted to suggest the SH-1 '59 with an A4 magnet swap.

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

You know, there seems to be a startling continuation in threads started by you (and your sock) about the 'best' of this and the 'best' of that.

Time and time again we've explained it to you that 'the best' doesn't really exist, there is a heap of variation both in styles of the same genre of music, as well as variability of amps/guitars/pickups that can create all sorts of similar/acceptable tones etc.

You still don't seem to get it.

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

Why don't you make the body semi-hollow? I think that's gonna make more resemblance to the tone you're looking for.

If it's a solid body, then forget about GB tone out of it.

HTH,

There are people who simply like to start arguments by asking "best" this and "best" that. They know it's all subjective, but they insist on throwing rocks by asking for "absolute best" anything. It's a form of psychological masturbation; they derive mental/egotistical pleasure from it.

It's sad, really, but I'm sure there's a prescription fashion accessory to go along with it.

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

Chambered, yes. Will look through the Benedettos, SD Jazz, and I have '59's and will look into that too.
Looking for the George Benson sound as I said above, also guess I should have said preferred pups for Benson tone/sound.
My main amp is a Fender Twin Super-sonic with gold Celestion speakers. Thanks for anyone with jazz experience able to share your preferences and recommendations regarding what you think is best for those looking for Benson type sound.

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

Or how about hummer-sized P-90s? (P-90s in a jazzbox will give you the ultimate jazz tone). But P-90s in a LP will get you closer than buckers will.

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

Of the pickups I have tried, honestly any low output humbuckers will do. I'm a little bit more partial to the Jazz (with the tone knob rolled way down, it still keeps the clarity) for jazz tones. I've also heard really really good things about the Seth Lovers for that purpose, though I haven't had the opportunity to use them myself yet.

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

I like the P-90 suggestion. It's what I jazz with in a Les Paul. That said, A2P's would be my second choice.

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

Kojak is right about the guitar.
However that doesn't mean you can get a killer jazz tone.
Pearly Gates neck is stunning, so is the APH.
Either set will be gorgeous.

Benson's sound is all about hollow body guitars, the note attack and resonance is totally different than a solid body. Jim Hall, Pat Martino, and a couple others have used LP type guitars in the past for Jazz. Any full sounding vintage style PUP should work, my issue with a lot of people trying to get a Jazz sound from solid bodies is the note attack gets plinky sounding. Other things that will help are heavier strings and dropping the PUP down more than you would for a rock setup. Also where you pick is key, picking closer to the neck will get you a bigger sound. All a matter of spending time in the woodshed experimenting.

Re: Absolute Best SD Jazz Pups?

Yep.....didn't need this sort of thread bumped.

But the sum total of his posts are both bumping old Benedetto related threads......
