hey guys ... i kinda mostly have my ears around what is meant by a 'marshal' sound or a 'fender' sound or the 'mesa/boogie'

please give me unmistakeable and commonly known examples of the 'vox' sounds ... what are the classic examples of Vox cleans?

what are the classic examples of vox gritty?

what are the classic examples of all out vox leads?

thanks

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

Vox clean..... I just think of U2 in general..

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

The AC30 is capable of a broad range of tones for such a simple amp. Here's a few examples. The Beatles (not to be confused with their nastier console preamp distortion sounds) Brian May from Queen, and virtually everything Ritchie Blackmore played on the first few Deep Purple albums, up to and including Machine Head. Both Blackmore and May put treble boosters in front of their AC30's, Blackmore a Hornby Skewes and May a Dallas Rangemaster.

Cheers.....................wahwah

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

Peter Buck from REM uses an AC30 alot...

most of the cleans for Nirvana's nevermind were a AC30 at the insistance of producer butch vig...

Dave Grohl's cleans for the foo fighters are an AC30.

think about anything U2 and its a Vox either AC15 or AC30

Brian May = Obviously

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

i have no idea what they actually used by lots of songs by the byrds have that ric into vox jangle

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

Heck, just catch a Tom Petty show. His lead player uses AC30's, everything from clean to crunchy. I tell ya, I love the AC30TB model in the Vox Valvetronix amps. It's pretty spot on, and it better be considering it's their amp...LOL. My Strat with that model is tone heaven. I love it.

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

A dimed out AC30 with the channels jumped generates a REALLY hairy tone! Coupled with a good 'bucker guitar there's more then enough grind there for middle of the road "rwak" tones. They can do a whole lot more then the clean jangly thang...

I actually just grabbed my mid-90s AC30 w/Blue Backs out of storage... haven't fired it up in several months. Someone tell me how to post clips on here & I'll run some down in the next couple three days, whenever I get 'roud to firing it up.

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

Here's a clip of a '94 Les Paul Standard (JB in the bridge) run into a cranked AC30.

(Please excuse the poor job of double-tracking. This clip is for tone examples only.)

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

I believe slash said he used them to record the velvet revolver album and some fenders. I know that jone jett uses them in the "i love rock n roll" song.

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

I just discovered the band Ratatat (see my other thread about his guitar, here). It looks like he's using an AC30 and gets and absolutely awesome rhythm tone. Sounds like fuzz boxes for his single-note stuff.

Also, check out Michael Penn (Sean's brother and Mr. Aimee Mann, lucky *&%^*!!!). He's another mini-humbucker-through-Vox kinda guy: Epi Sheraton and Matchless when I saw him. Very "late Beatles".

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

And add in some Crowded House & Rory Gallagher :bigok:

For Rory, the best examples I can find are his albums with Taste and anything before Irish Tour '74. He used a Fender '59 Bassman on that tour, and from then on used a bunch of things, the Vox was still there, but among Fenders, Stramps, and Marshalls.

Re: AC30 tone - examples please

Jeff's used a lotta different stuff over the years...

Old Fenders are another mainstay...

True, but in live vids all the way back to A.M. and Being there to now, I've seen that Vox amp. It's also in the Wilco Book. I'd assume that it's on a decent amount of Wilco stuff. But yes, he uses a ton of stuff. Jay Bennett's been all over the place with gear on the first two albums, but he's usually got a Bassman and an SG Junior with Vibrola. He too used an AC30 with it, probably in stereo.
