Ac30 vs twin reverb for fitting in a band mix??

Guys... I recently got an ac30 and I played it today at our rehearsal and it seemed like it fit in the mix a bit better than my twin, which I normally play. I'm playing mostly lead.

Any thoughts or opinions? Is it the mid range that makes the difference?

Re: Ac30 vs twin reverb for fitting in a band mix??

I always thought the Twin Reverb had a deepness/airyness that made it sit in the back vs the ac30.
I like the blackface tone in that way, it's like it purposefully leaves room for a lead guitarist to fit right in with a more middy amp.

Why not use both?

You can alway use the extra fullness...

Re: Ac30 vs twin reverb for fitting in a band mix??

There are magic electrons in Vox amps. (I've seen them as well as heard them).

Re: Ac30 vs twin reverb for fitting in a band mix??

I do have both but I haven't used them together yet. Two big ass amps for smaller gigs seems a little overkill ha

What eq helps a guitar fit in the mix?

Re: Ac30 vs twin reverb for fitting in a band mix??

ye the AC30 will cut more, but the twin has more bottom end. I guess it depends on what you need.
You can always do my secret magic simple mod to your twin for more push and thickness tho so you dont have that hollow scoopy sound.

Hmmm... What's this mod you speak of?

swap the .047uf bass cap for a .022. It will fill in the mids and add low end - essentially turning the twin's tone stack into the same one as a super reverb. It will thicken and warm your tone considerably without changing the treble content. You can still roll back all tone controls to get zero response too.
You can leave the other channel unmodified to hear the difference.
It will affect your tone thus if all tone knobs are set to 5. The Green line is stock, the aqua line is modified.

As a VOX fan Ac30s seem to cut through way more and are more in your face and aggressive. If that what you want then they are great. I have never directly compared a twin but to me the fender sound is bigger with more shimmery highs and deep lows but less cut and more washy (in a good way). I just prefer the VOX nasal grit kinda sound.

Yep.

Ideally, you want both. Those are two good amps to have. To tell you the truth, seek out a black or silver Pro Reverb instead of a Twin Reverb. I've owned a lot of amps, and the Pro Reverb and AC30 are two beautiful sounding amplifiers.

I love this mod. I am having work done to my '72 Quad I think I am having this done while they are working on it. Thanks.

win. Just lets keep it a bit of a secret here on the SD forum. I like that everyone thinks that twins are "too loud, too cold, too clean, too sterile" etc....it keeps used prices down!

Nowadays, scouring the used ads for silver face Fenders, dialed in, or needing an overhaul, is a good way to go.

Buying those and getting them to sound amazing is a cheaper alternative to high dollar handwired amps.

And I don't know about all the Craigslist listings, but in Los Angeles there's dozens of good Vox amps listed weekly.
Buy one and retube it, and it's like new. Those Chinese ones depreciate like crazy, so a used CC model is a good way to go.

Really? Links? I've been really wanting a Vox AC30 for a while now and want to see what kind of deals I can get.

Re: Ac30 vs twin reverb for fitting in a band mix??

I am considering doing this mod to my Twin. I just love my Super so much, that when I play my twin, I wish it sounded more like the Super. I wish I knew how to do something like that myself, but I don't. I would need to bring it it to the tech. So, I'm thinking when the time comes for new tubes maybe I'll have him do that mod while he's basing a new set of output glass.

Re: Ac30 vs twin reverb for fitting in a band mix??

if your twin is an old style PTP amp then its an easy job. One component and a little bit of soldering. If you want a wiring layout ill send you one.
...sorry to op for getting off topic.

Re: Ac30 vs twin reverb for fitting in a band mix??

BF/SF Fender amps tend to get lost in the mix due to the lack of midrange and no mods, tubes or speakers can really fix that. You might make it "better" but they still tend to get covered up unless you are the only guitar player in the band.

A few years back I was in a 2 guitar band any my only amp was a 69 Twin Reverb, the other guitar player used an AC-30/6 and when I listen back to live clips I was getting covered up almost every gig...
