Accessing Upper Frets on Les Paul

Anyone got tips on how to nail those high frets on a Les Paul? I have a hard time hitting them sitting down. When I am standing I can position the neck straight up ala Slash and get them.

How big are your hands? Upper fret access is one of the few parts of guitar where hand size actually makes a difference. I don't play that high up the neck too often anyway so I hardly notice.

Size matters on an LP. The neck's depth/carve and your's.
Also, some people can play well with no or less thumb contact, others can't, or just not as well.

This is one of those 'practice and you'll do it better' areas. Or maybe 'sit the guitar on the other knee'.
The upper fret access is much more difficult for a LP than the thinner strat or longer necked SG or Firebird. There are some curved heel Les Pauls about.....but these tend to be much more heavy music oriented models. The traditionalists don't let Gibson stray that far from the 50's for the regular models.

I would say my fingers are medium sized/slightly longer. I don’t have short fingers.

Play it like a classical guitar when seated. Set the guitar on your left knee with the neck up at a 45 degree angle and set your left foot on something to raise it up.

Re: Accessing Upper Frets on Les Paul

I'm a LP fan, with big hands, and reaching the high frets is possible, but not as well as the other frets. The neck/body juncture is at the 16th fret and with a single cutaway, there are limits. When I really want to play way up the neck for any length of time, I switch to a SG (22nd fret juncture). V's have almost as good an access.

Re: Accessing Upper Frets on Les Paul

I have the same problem, I ended up selling my LP's and buying Jacksons, I play in a glam metal band so access to the upper range is a must have

Re: Accessing Upper Frets on Les Paul

Watch a recent video of Mick Box of Uriah Heep. He changes the position of his thumb for upper fret access. I'm not a fret wizard, but it does kinda help

Also check out the left handed Buzzard Bass, and drummer uses bike racing shoes.

I like this concert one of my favorites from the good old days, but if you're not that interested in them skip to about 18:30 for an example

Re: Accessing Upper Frets on Les Paul

If you really wanna access those upper frets on a Les Paul with ease, sell it and get an SG.

Re: Accessing Upper Frets on Les Paul

I have mediun hands. To reach the higher frets on my Les Paul I turn my thumb to point the nut. Still I can't reach the frets from 15 to higher position on the lower three strings.

Re: Accessing Upper Frets on Les Paul

Violinists have been accessing those upper reaches without a cutaway for ages.

Just have to train yourself and take your music as seriously as they do....I guess.

Me? Well upper access (or the lack of...) is one reason I don’t play a Les Paul.

Re: Accessing Upper Frets on Les Paul

I cut my teeth on a LP and I will always love the sound and the look of those models, but I have weak little girly hands and I'm lazy. Got tired of never being able to reach comfortably and swapped to double-cuts and never got back to the LPs. Ended up collecting guitars built like LPs with same or similar scale length and same woods, but with better access.
