Acoustic Cleanup

These haven’t gotten any attention for months. Took the time to clean/oil and restring both over the last week. Forgotten how good they each play as well as the purity of sound of a good acoustic guitar.

Re: Acoustic Cleanup

Wow, those are some nice guitars! What is the top of the Tacoma made from?

Re: Acoustic Cleanup

Thanks! Two very different guitars for sure. Tacoma is an EKK-9 with Koa top/back & sides.

Re: Acoustic Cleanup

Kia, that's a native Korean wood.... right? :11:

Beautiful guitars!

Re: Acoustic Cleanup

Had these out and been playing them exclusively for last few days. The Tacoma takes a lot more “fight” to play compared to the Guild which plays so easily. Strings feel more tense and it requires more pressure to depress the strings in position as well as a harder picking attack to get it to project. I think it likes being treated a little rough as it definitely responds better tonally to the added effort.

Re: Acoustic Cleanup

Awesome! Definitely a nice pair of acoustics! Miss my Tacoma and looking forward to my old Guild getting out of the shop.

Enjoy!

Re: Acoustic Cleanup

I've read that Koa tops can take longer than spruce or cedar to "play in" on an acoustic, so it makes sense you have to dig in harder on that one. I've also read that when Koa does break in it's something special. I've never owned a Koa guitar and have only played a couple in stores.... but I love the way they look.

Here's my baby. She's a Taylor 2011 W14ce-LTD; one of the Fall 2011 SE guitars. Sitka top and flamed Walnut sides and back. I really love playing it and I have it hanging right above one of the front speakers of my home theater system, so it's always in view.

Re: Acoustic Cleanup

That’s a beauty you have there! Very nice indeed. I keep mine out in plain view as well but they have been neglected. No more.

The Tacoma is a 2001 and it’s been lovingly played in its life. I have Pearce .12-.53 in it now tuned down a half step. Hopefully the strings will stretch out and break in nicely. Otherwise I may try a lighter gauge.

Re: Acoustic Cleanup

I first went with 10's on mine as I have some mild nerve damage in my hands. They play nicely but volume and tone suffer just a bit. I've put 11's on it now and the sound is better. I'm working to adjust to the new string tension, but it's not terrible.
