acoustic guitar strings

talk to me about them. I put a set of D'addario 11's on my wife's acoustic (suzuki) and they are overly bright in that guitar. I have the same set in my applause and they sound fine. the suzuki is a full sized acoustic while my applause is a shallow bowl. I'm thinking thicker strings but can anyone suggest anything else. thanks

All string manufacturers have different materials that they use for making strings. Bronze has a tendancy to be bright, nickle is less bright than stainless Etc. I think 11's are way to light for acoustic (IMO). I use D'Adarrio J17's (13 thru 56) on all my acoustic guitars (10 in all). I have a real fondness for a heavy string. I also use 11's on my electric guitars. The heavier the string the better the sound. More mass will produce a much better bottom. You may find a different brand in a light gauge may be OK also. MAybe some of the other guys can tell you more about that. I have been using D'Adarrio strings for well over 10 years and have never really had any problems with them

Elixirs warmed up my low budget Epiphone acoustic real nice. They took away that *quack* when moving up and down the neck too...

The Martin bronze strings sound real nice, but wear out quickly. I like the elixirs (polyweb) I have on my guitar now. I have the 13 set, but it's tuned down to C#. Try the 12s or 13s, depending on if you like thicker or thinner strings.

the martin phosphor bronze .012 (light) set i really like. they do wear out quickly though. i like the tone when u just put them on, on my martin really makes it come alive and brightens it a bit, over time, they wear down and die, but i like that more mellow bassy tone as well. Clarity remains nearly the same. try em out

thanks guys/gals ... you are all helpful. I kinda wanted to stick with the D'addario's, maybe just thicker strings or maybe another line of them. the sad part is that the suzuki sounded better with stock strings. i will get to the bottom of this.

True, I was one of their beta testers, but I have to say, the new Cleartone strings are the best-sounding and longest-lasting acoustic strings I have ever used.

If you have a store in your area that specializes in acoustic instruments, you might want to check them out and get their recommendations. The first set of strings might cost a buck more, but then you can buy from whomever.
