Acoustic guitar with electric pickup?

Everyone has heard of an electric guitar (with electric strings) that doubles as an acoustic guitar due to a piezo pickup. However, are there any guitars that are primarly acoustic guitars (with acoustic strings) that also have an electric pickup? I want a guitar that plays and sounds like an acoustic when unplugged but can also sound like a mellow electric when played through an amp. Do these guitars exist?

Re: Acoustic guitar with electric pickup?

The Gibson J-160-E - mainly associated with Them Thar Beatles - features a P90-type coil mounted through the end of the fingerboard. Its top-mounted volume and tone controls should allow you to mellow the amplified tone. For guitarists on a budget, there is/was an Epiphone version.

It is a pity that you have stipulated true, mechanical acoustic usability. I was about to suggest the Gibson Chet Atkins solidbody classical and steel strung models. Sheesh. Now I have given myself GAS again. :banghead:

I saw a guy gigging with a looper and a Taylor T5 like this, and he was getting legitimately BAD-ASS electric crunch tones out of it. I couldn't believe it.

Re: Acoustic guitar with electric pickup?

Epiphone makes a cheaper version of the already mentioned Gibson.

It's a John Lennon model signature.

How would a hollow/semi-hollow body electric sound with a piezo? That might work.

The Loar LH-650's/350's = acoustic (as it comes stock w acoustic strings)

Then there is Crafter's take on this concept - simply called, the SAT

Acoustic giant, Martin, is selling this as an acoutis, with a pick up.
Comes with a Martin style price tag too.

Eastwood makes this thin-line Delta 6 reso . . . first and formost an acoustic, but with a killer blend knob.
Acoustic, or just P90, or a blend of 'anywhere in between' the two.

Thare are many other Dobro style (wooden body) resophonic guitars with pick ups, but i don't think the OP is referring to Resonator acoustics.
