acoustic recommendations

Re: acoustic recommendations

A used Larrivee 03 series guitar can be had for around $500. They're great guitars!

Re: acoustic recommendations

This guy said mid to lower price wise, yamaha's the easy choice. check out this yamaha, it states it is the worlds best selling acoustic with electronics, and it's easy to transition between electric and acoustic. I can tell by looking at it that you'll have no trouble with this guitar: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-APX5...W-/220779501533?pt=Guitar&hash=item33677bd7dd

Eh... I've played that model at GC. Kinda generic quality and not the best tone. I'd find a better, used Yamaha for the same money. (They get better with age.) Something more like this:

Re: acoustic recommendations

i'd go for this yamaha for $500.00, no electronics. You're money's going into the guitar. you'll have to buy a Dean Markley Woody pickup for it, $80-$100.. Duncan makes some too, but I haven't tried one, I will some day. This guitar has an ebony fingerboard, good woods, and is handcrafted. You can't beat that for 500 bucks.

Just for kicks check out this "Silent" yamaha, i bet that would go over well on stage, as just a "stick", lol!!!

Re: acoustic recommendations

I've never been an acoustic guy in my life....but camping a lot always makes me wish I had one.... Looking for something middle to lower end price wise... But most importantly I'd REALLY like it to play like an electric..

I'm not a fan of huge strings and high action .

Any suggestions for me?

There is not a music store within a hundred miles of here so your input is greatly appreciated.

Buy a battery powered amp & bring your electric!

Re: acoustic recommendations

My wife has a little Blueridge OM knockoff I bought for her a few years back for around $400. It's a CANNON. And it plays really easily with light strings on it. Great for bluesy flatpicking. Stays in tune, too. I often pick it up instead of my Martin D16 (However, if you can get a D16 used at a good price, it is awesome. I wish I had an electric with its neck. The action is amazing and buzz-free even with a medium attack).

Re: acoustic recommendations

you might want to consider doing yourself a favor some day. bite the bullet and eventually get a regular acoustic guitar, string it with .11 or.12 and get used to it playing it exclusively for a year or two, or make it your main practice guitar. when you go back to electric, it's like a hot knife through butter... And you'll discover all kinds of realy cool things playing an acoustic that you just won't get from playing mostly electric. you'll expand.

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly I started practicing on my acoustic almost exclusively about 10 years ago, and my finger strength and dexterity is much higher than your average electric only player. I also think I'm a much more accurate picker because of it.

I would recommend a Blueridge or an Epiphone Masterbilt. You should be able to find a used Masterbilt in the $300-$400 ish range. I love my Epiphone AJ-500R, it is a ridiculously loud instrument, it blow every Taylor I've ever heard out of the water, and most Martins too. I paid $550 for mine, new, I believe. Seagulls are nice in the $300ish used range also.

I would avoid Ovation. Ovations in your price range are very thin sounding, and not very loud. If you are playing with another guitarist unplugged, you'll get drowned out very easily. They sound great plugged in, and do play a little easier than some other acoustics, but overall, you'll get a better campfire sound from something made from real wood.

I've got one.... just the kind of people we usually go camping with would really dislike me if I was laying out the squeals and divebombs.... they just don't get it.... needs to sound more mellow for them...

Thanks for all the recommendations guys, I'm looking into a lot of great stuff.

I do have two guitars strung 11-56... which I play in drop C or drop b or even B std.... but there is no buzz, and action is pretty darn low.... most acoustics I've played don't equal up to that.. they tend to be stiff, and have really high action.. not smooth or silky whatsoever.

I imagine there is a lot out there that I really need to get my hands on though and try out for mine own fingers/ears.

A good acoustic guitar shouldn't have action issues. My AJ-500R take a heavier touch than my strat, but it's still smooth as silk when I want to play fast on it. I play .013-.056 strings on mine, you just have to make sure to set up the action for the string gauge you are using.

A cheaper acoustic guitar strung with 12's or 13's is going to have neck issues, especially if there is no truss rod. I've had that issue with several cheaper Yamahas that I've played.

A couple other options to consider would be a Stratacoustic or Teleacoustic from Fender. They aren't loud or boomy, but they play easily.

Re: acoustic recommendations

Only acoustic I've ever played that felt like an electric was an Alvarez.

Not a pricy Yairi Alvarez - just a regular Alvarez.

Re: acoustic recommendations

My first acoustic was an Alvarez Regent. Excellent guitar, I usually played it with 13's and it still was smooth. Those can be had for $300ish if you find a used one!

Re: acoustic recommendations

I had a dean mlcoustic that was pretty cool and played well but it felt too small..7/8 sized....

I'm not opposed to any certain brand except fender..hatred ever fender I've ever held or played.

Lots of great info guys thanks so much.

Re: acoustic recommendations

I bought one of my daughters an inexpensive breedlove and I hate to admit that I enjoy playing it more than my Taylor
