I happened to troll guitar center for a while to buy an acoustic for my wife.

IMHO the Taylors blew away the competition in all price categories they competed in. Still with wide variance from guitar to guitar but hey they are acoustics. The only thing holding up were Martins if you are into mellower sound but alas we are not.

What I do like is Takamines but they don't seem to make better than mass market right now, or GC isn't selling them.

I'd definitely say Ovation, and buy a set of 9s, use the high strings, and use regular 10s acoustic set for the wound strings. (Wound G is optional. Whatever you'd prefer)

A few people mentioned Seagull, they (or one of the other Godin acoustic brands like Art and Lutherie) are awesome deals, particularly used. They are manufactured in Canada too which gives them some extra points in my book over the Chinese and Korean guitars that compete in the same price range.

I've never been an acoustic guy in my life....but camping a lot always makes me wish I had one.... Looking for something middle to lower end price wise... But most importantly I'd REALLY like it to play like an electric..
I'm not a fan of huge strings and high action .

Question (and this may have been addressed somewhere above): are you a "play around the campfire" kind of guy?
Is that what you are looking for in this acoustic?

Because if that's true, then the Seagull/Taylor/Ovation suggestions are all valid and dependent on you trying them out first hand.
IMO, the Ovation neck is the closest thing to an electric that you're going to find for under 1K.
But the Seagull and Taylors are very nice guitars for the money.

That said, what about a travel guitar?
You want something that feels like an electric, get an electric.
Traveler Electrics.
Traveler Acoustics.
