Acoustic Strings Recommendations

I'm talking 6 string, steel string guitar. Can any of you guys suggest some brands I could try? I'm currently go between D'addario 11s and 12s. I'm digging the 12s more, lately.

Anyway, I was wondering if there were any other brands I could try. I know EB makes damn fine electric strings (I use Slinkys) but do they, or any other company for that matter, offer any acoustic strings that are noteworthy?

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

Any brand suggestions?

A somewhat related question:

Also, the store I got the guitar from is giving me a free tune-up/setup on the guitar for the first year (I bought it sometime in October or September). I've heard that a tuneup is good for an acoustic, especially during the winter.

Out of curiosity, what type of stuff goes into this setup? Is it the same stuff as an electric? Intonation, truss rod, etc? I only ask because the action and intonation are just fine on this guitar, but I've noticed a buzz on the 13th fret of the high E (the only place on the whole fingerboard). I didn't notice this buzz before, and I seriously doubt it was present when I bought the guitar, as I tested it thoroughly. It may be because of the 11s I'm using, as they're thinner, and rest closer to the fingerboard. Will moving back to the 12s alleviate it? I'm going to grab a set of 12s in a day or two, anyways.

I didn't acompany my last reply with any explanation because I don't have one, not because they're that great. More of a personal preferance.

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

i tried the new d'addario coated strings...they dont feel coated at all, which is good, and they last and sound great. i have the mediums on my taylor now and it sounds wonderful....

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

+1 on Elixirs - Nanowebs

but NOT the new bronze-phosphor type :banned:

They last a long time and produce good tone to my ears.

Without a doubt Elixir Polywebs are by far my favorite! They cost a bit but, they last a long time, feel, and sound great!!!!

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

+1 to the Elixirs. THe "house" acoustic gets it's strings changed very rarely, but it is played every day. The tone stays strong for quite a while with many different people playing it. I do really like the Phospor Bronze D'Addario 12's though.

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

another vote for elixirs. I haven't tried any other coated string brand but all i can say is once you try elixirs its hard to go back to non-coated strings IMO.

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

Besides D'Addario EJ16's I also use Martin Studio/Performance SP4100's. They're both excellent strings.

for acoustics, elixers. for electrics, anything but elixers.

Agreed.

Hated the tone, the feel, and the fuzz with Elixirs on the Strat.

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

Thanks guys, I'll grab either the D'addario Bronze 12s or the Elixirs tomorrow or day after.

Can anyone answer the other part of my question, about the fret buzz?

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

Newtone 'Master Class'. They last longer than D'Addarios and have a finer winding.

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

For buzzing, there's no substitute for Frank Ford's Buzz Diagnosis

Sight unseen, I'm guess that either (1) that the treble side of the 13th fret (+ or - a fret) has popped up just a touch due to humidity changes, (2) lighter strings => less tension => less relief in the neck & lower action and the fret was always a touch high, or, most likely (3) both. Even if putting a regular "light" set back on makes the buzz go away, there's still a high fret hiding there.

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

Elixir, or DR. Nothing else works for acoustic (at least on MINE).

Re: Acoustic Strings Recommendations

Another vote for Elixirs. They soudn great and last a long time too. I liked them so much, I even tried their electric string on one of my electrics. Boy that sucked!

...I've also used Martin strings which I highly recommend too...
