Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

I need to re-string my Yamaha electro but want good quality strings that will retain their sparkle and that I can bend a little. I think the ones on at the moment are 12's. The guitar is very full sounding so I think I could go down to 11's without any real loss of sound, but I just don't know what are the nicest sounding strings. Any help appreciated.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

On acoustics, I always use Martin Marquis 80/20 bronze. I think they have the best sound. They DON'T last as long as others, but do sound really good.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

D'Addario EXP11.

I use EXP10 in my Takamine, I like'em light.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

Elixirs 12s. I like Elixirs for the acoustics.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

D'addario lights - but I'm playing an ovation through a modeler...I really don't care that much about acoustic strings.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

Thanks folks.... I'm thinking I'll try Elixir 11's as the guitar has lots of natural warmth.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

i like martin sp 13-56 or dr sunbeams 13-56

i find that anything lighter than 12's on most acoustics dont sound as good unless the guitars are very lightly braced or the acoustic tone isnt important

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

I have a " sweet " deal with my music store .

I buy 5 Martin packs at a time from them but , I have them break the strings down in 12's and end up with 45's at the heavy end !:naughty:

Yep the smaller bass strings sound fuller and brighter , they ring - acoustic strings that are in the 48g and higher sound like they " thud " and are dull compared to the 45's 44's & 43's .

The heavier guaged stings on the 1 & 2 spots really ring out loud and clear , the 11's 10's and 9's are skinny and sound like they plink , they are really weak sounding in comparison . And the heavier 12's record much better to my ears .

Most music stores won't break up two strings sets to make one unless you have a good relationship with the store and it's owner . I do , I buy stuff from them a lot and that helps me get it " MY WAY " heh heh heh .

I just bought a Fender leather guitar strap from them

, online the strap was over $60.00 ! I got it and the 5 packs of modified strings for $75.00 I couldn't find that kind of deal on the net !

Sincerely :

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

Thanks J and Hurricane.

That strap looks very much like my Levys straps that cost £45 over here... so a great deal indeed!!

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

I'm an Elixer man when it comes to acoustics. Well, at least on my Taylor. That's what they come with and that's what they recommend. When it comes to my 12 string Yamaha, I've forgotten what I use.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

Well, you said "any help appreciated", so here's what I use. I use exactly the same strings I use on my electrics. I just like using electric strings on my acoustic.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

D'Addario EXPs. I love the elixer nano webs for electric but i hate their acoustic strings.

You will find more tone in a heavier string. I use 13's on all my acoustics. Some of my instruments are tuned a little differently so a heavier string helps them to play better. When you tune down to D or lower you will need a string that behaves with lower tension. 13's do it for me. I specifically like the D'Adarrio J17's. I've tried a lot of others, but these just work real well for me. They last a long time & sound really good.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

Elixirs and nothing else on my acoustics. The polyweb variety is my favorite since they don't sound overly bright but the nano are just fine as well.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

I use D'Addario J-series or EXP phosphor bronze all my guitars--Martins, Taylor and Ibanez. Mostly I use Mediums, but I also use Lights and Bluegrass gauges. I also have had really good luck with the Martin SP-4200.

Personally, I don't like Elixir strings. They are higher tension than the D'Addarios, and I tend to break them. Nanos, Polys, 80/20, PB--tried them all with little success. The Taylor 710 CE shipped with Elixirs, and I can't believe how much warmer and smoother it sounds with the D'Addario J- or EXP strings.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

I've got Martin SP 12s on my Martin LX1 - good midrange and warmth, which compensates for the tonal limitations of a small body to a degree. I did try D'Addarios but they were a bit brighter than I liked on this guitar, so I went back to the SPs.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

I've tried a bunch of different acoustic strings but I keep coming back to D'Addario. I use the Custom Light phosphor bronze strings model EJ26.

Re: Acoustic strings.... what do you use?

D'Addario EXP16's or 17's, depending on the guitar itself. My Seagull for example, has a soft Cedar top which takes less torque to vibrate, so I use 12's. The Marlboro Martin has a stiffer Spruce top so I use 13's.

I also like to try and find a string that has a good amount of life in it, and lets the guitar itself shine through. I've tried several other string manufacturers and the string colors the tone more than I'd like. I have different guitars for their differences in tone, so I like to find a string that allows me to hear such. For awhile I was searching for the best brand and gauge for each particular guitar, and I wound up finding that because of doing so, I'd made all my guitars sound eerily similar.
