acoustic top repair

My dad bought his Takamine 6 string acoustic in 1976, and about ten years into its life managed to drop it, causing a small part of the top (bottom right of the body) to seperate slightly from the sides of the guitar. It was barely noticeable and didn't affect the sound enough for my dad to ever get it repaired. The guitar's been mine for five years, and everything was fine until I switched up from light to normal strings, tuned the guitar up, and the seam grew from being about one inch, to peeling halfway up the body (oops!)

Anyways, I took it to a luthier, and when I got the guitar back, he claimed there was no real way to fix this kind of damage because the guitar has a laminate top. So what he did was basically fill the inside of the seam with epoxy, and instruct me to use ultralite strings (though he did get the regulars to tune up without breaking the guitar).

So is there any real way to fix this? It feels a bit unstable... On the off chance anyone has a better knowledge of guitars than my luthier.
thanks,
Dan

Re: acoustic top repair

A new top. Or remove the epoxy, wet the top, bend it back to shape, reglue, then refin. It's alot of work, but, if it means ALOT to you, it can be done. I think right now, a new top is your best bet, since it's gonna be hell to try and remove the epoxy that the "luthier" filled the gap with. A person shouldnt work on guitars if he/she dosnt know what they're doing. The ultra's are 10's and the regulars are 13's? Try using 11's or 12's.
