Active guitar pick ups in a bass guitar ?

Re: Active guitar pick ups in a bass guitar ?

Local H may have done something like it. I bet dual outs with the blackouts and a bass pup on an 8 or 12 would be cool.

off u see did MRSAge, I m on tapa talk and auto correct is hating on me

Other way around scoobie... Local H put bass pickups on his guitar.

It'll work, but may not be the best pickup for the application. One example that does work is an EMG-SA in a Squier Bronco Bass. An example of going the other way (passive guitar pup in a formerly active bass); I've heard that EMGHZ-H4s work great in a Steinberger with guitar-sized routes.

Please tell us WHY. If it's because you have a Steinberger style bass that has guitar humbucker sized pickups, that is one thing. If you're asking to create some different kind of sound that's an entirely different thing.

My Chapman Stick employs two EMG-FT pickups to sense the entire frequency range of the instrument.

I would happily install an active replacement pickup for Stratocaster into a '51-style Precision or '68-style Telecaster Bass.

I have a Bill Lawrence 500XL in my Bronco and it does a good job.

My experience has shown me that it really doesn't matter the type of pickup because the physics of the instrument win out over the pickups characteristics. So using a guitar pickup in a bass doesn't make the instrument sound any more like a guitar and ultimately it's a compromise because the pickup isn't calibrated to work with the physics of the instrument.

I have two Steinbergers......and the active pups create more distinct tone. But they don't hold the bass lines/feel or create the vibration some want in classic rock. The deep deep low end comes better from Pbass type pups. Of course, for slap and plucking, the Steinberger jumps out. The Jbass and Jbass pups do hold their own though, and from the little I've seen it's again down to the bass player.

Actually since this is about active pickups, many of those ARE calibrated to the physics of the instrument. What I mean is, there are high and low frequency roll offs. Some of the frequencies you want for a bass are hardly there at all. They've been removed. It could be like running your bass through an EQ pedal and pulling the highest and lowest faders down all the way.

A passive pickup is different because the high and low roll offs are natural resonance byproducts of the coil.

I have one bass with "Humbuckers" and it turns out the stock ones under the covers were Gotohs that had 6 guitar pole pieces. So the A and D strings were weaker and ambiguous because they were not over a pole. Many active pickups have blades, so that's good. (EMG makes a bass humbucker as well) I stuck a couple Dimebuckers in there which were an improvement, but single coil and parallel wiring are better than series. Series is boring sounding.

Summary-in my experience, in many active guitar pickups there are frequencies you'd want for your bass that are extremely attenuated.
