Active systems for removing feedback!

ok, in talking to my dad, he said that what i need is not a noise suppressor, but a device to remove feedback.... would a NS-2 do this or do i have to get looking??

Basically my dad explained that feedback is one tone, so it must be possible to remove it with a device like a pedal.

Do these exist?

Any advice, suggestions?

Cheers,

Re: Active systems for removing feedback!

i have never seen one in a pedal meant for electric guitar - only a rack mount or 'quasi' rack mountable unit .. there is an antifeedback feature in the yamaha ag-magic stomp .. it is intended mainly for acoustic guitars that feedback when played too loud on stage .. works real well

what you need is a very sharp (high Q) tuneable notch filter that can zap the frequency where the feedback is occuring, ideally without coloring the sound of the frequencies around it .. if the feedback is happening at multiple freqs, you'd need multiple filters (i think that behringer, and others like it have multiple filters per channel) .. if the source is stereo, you will probably want a stereo device ...

the thing i hate about devices such as these is that they allow for PA systems to be run at a higher volume level than would otherwise be possible ... too many times the sound is simply too loud to enjoy .. if people are uncomfortable, they are not being entertained

Re: Active systems for removing feedback!

I used to get feedback when standing/sitting close to my amp, but the NS-2 actually fixed it, I just have the threshold set all the way up. I guess it changes the tone a tiny bit, but it sounds good to me, clearer, smaller in a good way.

Re: Active systems for removing feedback!

if you're getting a high pitched microphonic feedback whenever you aren't playing then that means you've got a problem with your pickups. to fix that you could either replace them or pot them. just search for "potting pickups" on google and you'll find a site that explains how to do it.

Re: Active systems for removing feedback!

no its definately feedback, only at loud volumes, builds up from quiet! no doubts there! Cheers Mr Heavy Metal! i may invest! hmm, any1 else had experience with the NS-2 reducing feedback??

Learn to control it. I wouldn't (and don't) depend on pedals for that.

If your guitar feeds back when the strings are muted, something in your signal chain (probably either tubes or pickups) is microphonic. I'd be surprised if it wasn't the pickups.

Re: Active systems for removing feedback!

hmmm... well, my pickups dont seem to be grounded, could this be the problem?

Re: Active systems for removing feedback!

Wtf? Pickups not grounded...wow. Don't you get a ton of buzz?

Re: Active systems for removing feedback!

a lil ;)! I need help on how to ground them!!! Someone please!

+1 ! Those feedback eliminators are nice for acoustic electrics, and microphone squeal, wind noise, etc. However, you are talking about gain (distortion) feedback ... I go by the words of Leslie West ... *If a kid tells me he having trouble controlling feedback, I put him in a closed room with a guitar, and a 100W Marshall turned to ten ... He'll learn to control it ...*
A bit excessive maybe, but it gets the point across.
