what do you think is a better bridge pickup? the emg 81, 85, 60, sd classic live wire or the metal live wire?

Never tried anything except the 81, But from what I've heard the 85 is the best... I voted 81 though.

definitely the 85. I use the 81 in the Bridge i an HHH setup but thats mainly because it doesn't sound good anywhere else but the bridge, but the 89 in the middle still rocks.

i've heard good things about the 81 in the bridge im starting to think it may be a bit over-rated?, maybe the 85 is a bit under-reated? oh well its down to trial and error i supose, ill just try em both and see what works! thanks for all the comments and votes

I've tried every pick-up on the list that you mention and although I tend to choose the 81 over any other (I have an 85 in the bridge of my alder bodied CARVIN BOLT+) the initial tone of the guitar determines what pick-up will go where. I put an 85 in the CARVIN not because I like the 85 better, but because an 81 on an alder body is WAY too bright for me. The darker tone of the 85 did the trick. If the character of the guitar is naturally darker like a mahogany body, the 81 will absolutely
scream. I prefer mahogany anyway so the high end of the 81 in combination with the dark sounding wood gives me all I want.
So check the tone of your guitar unplugged and see if it's dark or bright
THEN make your pick. I prefer the 60 in the neck because I can set the tone on the amp to sound thick on the bridge pup and switch to the 60 in the neck and NOT reset the bass for the neck pup. It has lots of high end, not too much bass & less mids which makes it less "boxey" in that position. So good luck !!!

85, but I must try the 60a which is an alnico version. It might make the 60 my weapon of choice.

I got a free set of Metal Livewires from a friend who like myself, does a lot of guitar work. He gave them to me because he told me that he was sure I would say that I finally found a tone that was TOO distorted, which I jokingly said did not exist for me. This thing is so compressed & undefined and when I tried to play it clean, the pick-up actually started to feed back as if it had distortion. I hated it of course but if some kid wants that distortion and doesn't plan on playing anything other than Death Metal then it's fine.
