Actually use an FU-Tone PMS? Tell me about it

So, I know jhale667 has a couple of them and seems pretty impressed. I was just wondering if anybody else has one and what they think.

Now, I know all the "OMG!!! BELL BRASS EQUALS THE TOANZ!!!" stuff is mostly snakeoil. When I started looking at this I never even thought the tone versus mounting directly to wood. I was thinking in terms of how much easier it made direct mounts (when you can't use a pickguard or ring).

My only issue with it is the price. I want one... I've put one in the shopping cart a few times but then never pulled the trigger. If it were $25-$30, I'd probably already have one, but $50 plus shipping hurts a bit. However, I think I'm going to get at least one mainly due to the mounting situation I have on one guitar and go from there.

There aren't any alternatives to the PMS, are there? I know some have said "just fabricate something yourself". I would... If I had access to the tools and whatnot.

My direct mounting idea is way better than that **** plus you can easily change the height on the fly. Sriously they didnt think this product over before releasing it.

Tools required 1x metal file and 1x screw driver.

Got some details on that? I might incorporate your ideas in a completely different guitar.

Actually you can easily make you FU setup height adjustable by just doing the screw part of y mod.

All you have to do is modify some screws with a metal file.

That's actually pretty darn nifty. For my needs I might need to flip the cover and file off the edges of the baseplate so I can screw that flat to the body, since there's no recesses on the sides for the screws.

In my experience it works best with active pickups like EMG's or Duncan Blackouts, but you can easily just put a wooden shim under the pickups, screw the shim to the body and the pickup to the shim.

Due to the preamp in EMG's and Blackouts, they tend to pick up more vibrations.

With passives it seems to be more of a cosmetic issue, or a way of preventing the pickup from tilting.
