Ok guys after hearing from a number of you about this issue with the Flanger, which one and Why?

Any of you who can post clips, please do so ,as I would like to hear it in the real world working VS> on a VH record.

Keep in mind that my final decision won't be based on True bypass or not ,as I use a switcher.

I'm looking at things like Availability for one, cost for another :smack: Oh yea and Most importantly Sound! :laugh2:

Also with the MXR, RE- issue or not, whether they are any good.

Finnally , becasue of the price thing, I have also considered an Ibanezz FL-9. What are your thoughts about them? Thanks guys.

Re: ADA or MXR ........

My personal fav Flangers are Electro Harmonix units, but I do have an MXR (original)and I have has the ADA...if you want ray gun and vomit flanger tones get the ADA...really all I could ever get out of it was ray gun sounds and sounds that made it sound like my guitar was throwing up! The MXR almost always sounds like Van Halen...not that that is a bad thing but that "Unchained" tone is what it really does. If tht eMXR and the ADA were my onluy 2 choices I would get the MXR. Which Ibanez unit is the FL-9? If I were gonna go but a Flanger right now I would get another Eh unit...maybe a Poly Chorus (it has chorus and Flanger settings as well as several other cool souds) I LOVE my Electric Mistress, it's a reissue but it has the smoothest most 3D flanging you have ever heard, it also has a cool Filter matrix setting that gives you this strange hollow/metallic tone that is not for every body but I use it almost as much as I use the Flanging! Also belive it or not, that little/mini Danalectro Flanger (I think it's called Hash Browns) really sounds pretty damen good...I hate that it's so small but I see them used for like 20-25 bucks and they have a pretty cool tone! I know I might have just given you more ideas but it's all about tone! good luck

Re: ADA or MXR ........

The Fl9 was a Flanger Ibanez had back inthe 80's It was Yellow and was Just re- issued alonf with their Ce9 purple chorus unit.

All this Re -issue stuff makes me wonder, If these thngs sounded as good as they di to begin with, and obviously they do compared to the newer stuff, why did they stop making them in the first place, and in the case of the MXR, they even stoped making the Re- issue again!

I find myself wondering the same thing.

I like the Ibanez and the MXR personally. I've played the Ibanez, but I've only heard the MXR, so just keep that in mind.

Re: ADA or MXR ........

Did the Ibanez come anywhere near sounding like the MXR? The thing is, Ihave a Boss Flanger and I HATE IT. It is the only Boss Pedal I have ever had that I did not like.

It sounds very metalic and it just wont do the old VH stuff.

I had a Boss FLanger about 15 years ago and it seemed to me that it was much better than the one I have now.

Re: ADA or MXR ........

I do know the Ibanez Flanger you are talking about now, but I have never played one. I will tell you this...there is a HUGE difference in th MXR and th Dunlop reissue of the MXR...in truth both are good, and both will cover the same ground but IMO the old MXR is far better. If you played the reissue and had never heard or played through the original it would be fine but as soon as you get your hands on an old one the reissue starts to sound weak and thin by comparison...just so you know

Re: ADA or MXR ........

Here is a quick ?, after scoping them out an E-bay, I have noticed that a lot of the original MXr's have the ground cut off of the plug.

Now I know there will some of you who say, it isn't need, BUT it was there for a reason, so is it something that is fixable if you wanted to get the ground back, and why would they cut them off in the first place.

Sorry guys for these dumb questions, but if I'm gonna spend way more money than I sould or really can, I'm gonna have exactly what I want and this is how I'm gonna find out :)

Re: ADA or MXR ........

I still think the ADA is a better pedal. More varied Flange sounds from VH to Steve Stevens and everything in between. If all you can get is laser gun sounds then you didn't mess with it. Switch the harmonics to 'even' and its pure Van Halen heaven. The tone is more transparent and the true bypass doesn't kill your tone the the MXR does.

I've used it live on Unchained, Aint talkin bout Love, Aftershock and Cradle will rock over the years and it nails the VH thing. I also was in a band years ago that did Rebel Yell and nailed that laser gun thing by moving the speed all the way up on it.

I think ADA made the best analog flange and chorus ever. I kept my MP-1 just for the chorus. theres just nothing better IMO.

Re: ADA or MXR ........

I've had a vintage ADA Flanger on my board for a year now (replacing a Dejavibe) and I really love it!! I never thought of myself as anyone who'd really use Flange, but it sounds so killer, I have to say it sounds better to me than all the others. It'll do that jet engine sound, swizzle stick, but what I use it most for is a spacey warble that's real slow. One thing I like to do is turn it on during prechoruses, when the band does an abrupt stop, rake the strings for that 'Atomic Punk' type thing, turn it off, then launch into a chorus. THAT'S a sound that makes the audience turn their heads to see what that sound is. Another thing to know about the ADA is that each part of it's circuit has a trimpot, which you can find out what it does, then tweak it's Q so it effects the proper knob exactly how you like it. I sat down for an hour, tweaking each trimpot, till it's corresponding knob had the perfect sweet spot. They do that at the factory to tune it, but old ones have drifted off their Q, so it's a good idea to retune it. My only complaint is the lack of an LED on the top.
