Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

STRATDELUXER97

Stratoblaster Tone Meister
Just did JM Corey's OS-2...This pedal has the circuit of both the SD1 and the DS1(sought of)....In it's stock form it has a pretty decent overdrive tone as you roll the color knob from the mid position to full counterclockwise...As you roll from mid point to full clockwise, this pedal gets bright, thin, and shrill...My mods took care of all the negative issues I heard with it today...

There's alot of great tones by just tweaking the tone and color knobs...The blend of both circuits is alot better now also...If you have an OS-2 you want to sound like another whole better pedal, contact me about it...I'm very happy with the outcome and I always trust my ears....If I Like it,you will too..

Re: Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

So what pedals do you mod now John? DS-1, TS-9, OS-2.....?

Re: Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

Ibanez TS5,TS7,TS9,TS9DX,TS10,808
Boss SD1,DS1,OS-2,OD-1
Vox ValveTone 810,830 distortion
Vox Wahs
Cry Baby Wahs...

And alot of other pedals that I can't quickly have come to my brain...LOL

Re: Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

I have a OS-2. I Used to use it to get a killer Slash like tone with
a Les Paul. But to my ears it's not really single coil friendly?? Kinda shrill ?
Sounds like this mod may help ? How would you rate the pedal stock
SC vs. HB. And than Modded SC vs. HB ??

The pedal now sounds alot better and more natural...I'm able to kill the shrillness by using better components and also small caps across the distortion diodes...I always voice my pedals using a strat with single coils..If I can make myself happy with a strat in the fullness department, then I'm happy....There's alot of good tonal adjustment on this pedal now and it articulates well due to a better opamp and the changes....You may just need to back off on the gain settings I used with my strat, but the pedal still has plenty of overall tone and drive adjustments...The color control is alot more usable,in that I like the tone on both extreme settings..The in between settings are really good because the pedal just has alot more of everything...Especially balls...My pedals have to have "balls"...

Send it to me and I'll fix it up and send it back...if you don't like what you hear, only pay the shipping.... You're a friend,so go for it buddy..

I keep staring at the board and wonder what it uses for clipping??
Looks neat by the way:)
Used to have one of those actually.

RID...There's a series of silicon diodes on the board that are hard to see...

Ok...is it assymetrical by the way, I have difficulties remembering the sound it had.
Sold due to getting some other stuff....sigh one should learn to keep some stuff;)

Yes...Asymetrical...The only one that isn't that comes to mind,is a Tube Screamer...I Like to mix and match diodes and diode types to see if I can enhance the harmonics and the tone..

Re: Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

Ah yeah, I just threw in 4 germanium diodes in my old Guv'nor...man that really sweeten up the sound...
Gonna use that one with my now three singlecoil Tokai strat;)
Man it is like going home playing a standart strat again...

Very cool buddy..Well,enjoy yourself with your Tokai strat.. :fest7:

Re: Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

after looking at the parts chart for the ds-1 that got modded, i've been trying to find out where i can put 2 LED's in that old boss power driver, and the 1uf film thing, the other 2 parts it said enhanced the bass & mids, so im assuming the other 3 made it less electronic sounding, which REALLY needs to be done to the pw-2. Sadly i don't know anything & have no idea where to put them. I think i stared at the circuit board for like an hour trying to figure it out. I need a book or something

Re: Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

Hehe yep it is an extremely beat up 1984 Goldstar sound strat....
Man I really need to get it refinished..it looks like a disaster;)
Hmm I am curious about that os-2....maybe we could persuade the hopefully happy owner to post some clips??
:)

Re: Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

John, what is Roland going with with that SIP up in the top of the pcb?
Also what DIP did you finally decide on going with (can't see the designation)?
You wouldn't happen to have a schematic of the stock one you could e-mail me would you (you know me and collecting distortion pedal schematics) ... Thanks ... :)

Re: Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

Hey John I gots an OS-2 and i was thinking on selling it, but then i see your post..
Ive always found it to be very lifeless and have lack of bass and the dist seems simply lifeless and boring...Would your mod improve that??,,also latley ive been using quiet a bright tone so mabye that would suit nicely as you voice it with your singles..:laugh2:

You dont have a soundclip do you?? not to worry if ya dont,,

Now come on Rid ... :laugh2: It's a BOSS overdrive, you know it's assymetrical clipping ... :laugh2: Shame on you ... :laugh2:

I don't know how much help this will be, but BOSS normally clumped two or three diodes next to the opamp, those are the clipping diodes that you want to replace or add to, the 1uF film cap, sounds like a coupling cap ... that more than likely would replace the same value cap, it's probably just a different type of cap. The only real way is to trace the schematic out, marking it as you go off to the side with a small dot (fine sharpie pen) from input to output. Either way John can hook you up.

Re: Add The Boss OS-2 To The Mod List

Haha yeah but that one is a dual one of sorts;)
Who nows what they had cooked up for it:D
Now that we have done our Plexi bugger, we are on to new stuff....hehe maybe something with FET's and some funny chip with a tubesimulation.....uh it will probally blow up in our heads;)
.......and I can now slap my self silly for being so damn forgetful....runs....

I would have imagined that they used assymetrical for the OD and symmetrical for the distortion, with different filtering, gain, and control range ... that's why I'm intersted in seeing if John has a schematic for it.
I also need to come across a schemtic for the old PH-1R phaser of theirs, you wouldn't have happened to come across one of those over in your part of the world would you Rid? ::::crosses fingers::::
