Add to the List of Must Have Pickups

After reading through several threads about what pickups for which guitars a thought floated itself to the surface of my mind:

Everyone should own a Custom.

I believe this statement to be true because of the myriad of reviews and testimony involving its versatility. It will be the next pickup I buy. That's right...I don't and never have owned the Custom (or any of its variations).

I do have a '59n, a JB, a P-Rails set, and a StraBro90 set. I think the JB is one of those 'must haves' because of its extreme nature. It's a great pickup to compare others and determine what one likes in terms of tone. The '59n is also a 'must have' because it's just a fundamentally good sounding pickup for any type of playing. I could add the P-Rails to this list, but I don't think it's earned its place in the category...yet.

So, in summation here's my list of 'must have' pickups (in no particular order). Feel free to add to it and give reasons. Single coil models are extremely welcome, too!

1. '59n
2. JB
3. Custom

What do you consider to be 'extreme' about the JB ? I've been using one for so long that to me it's the standard humbucker sound by which all others must be judged.

Re: Add to the List of Must Have Pickups

I used a JB for close to 15 years in one guitar and I enjoyed it. But search for JB on SDUGF and you'll find yourself up to the eyeballs in conflicting opinions about its sound, mostly concerning the EQ and how people feel about it. That's what I meant by "extreme nature". Immediately following that statement I said it is a great pickup to compare others to, similar to your statement. I think we're in agreement about the JB. Any other pickups you consider a "must have"?

Antiquity humbuckers in a Les Paul, and a set of the Strat Texas Hot Antiquitys with the hot bridge and a RW/RP middle.

MUST have.

Re: Add to the List of Must Have Pickups

For me its really more of a wishlist

....I've tried all of my picks except the "bro" but, since joining sdugf, I've read so much about it I'm going to eventually do something I never thought I would do.... spend $160 for one pickup.......

(Gearjoneser's "Best LP Combo")
Brobucker bridge
pearly gates neck

I like that the Brobucker a fills "hole" in the line up between vintage and high outputs...

Also PG is a must have because I never heard one not sound great regardless of the guitar it was in

SP90 set - love p90s
Invader -for high output needs
Jazz neck - to add versatility w/ various pups in bridge
