Add tone pot to Schecter KM6?

Hi guys,
I just bought a Schecter KM6, and swapped out the pickups for the Livewire Mustaines. It's tuned to Eb Standard and I play metal. I love the tone and grind, but it seems a bit too in-your-face... the TB-6 distortion in my Ibanez, and the Blackouts in my Hellraiser both sound better to me. I'm toying with the idea of either swapping out for a distortion set and putting a JB in the Ibanez, or adding a tone pot to hopefully tame it a bit. It would have to be routed to make a bigger control cavity so I'm not sure whether it would be worth it. Thoughts?

Selling it would be tough since I'm a lefty, so I don't mind ruining the resale value to get what I want lol.

So it has 1 pot only? Edit: You can go to a 50k volume pot if you don't want to take the bonesaw to your guitar. You can also use a 50k resistor in series with a cap across the output jack to simulate a tone pot.

So it has 1 pot only? You can go to a 250k or 300k volume pot or use a concentric pot if you don't want to take the bonesaw to your guitar. You can also use a 50k resistor in series with a cap across the output jack to simulate a tone pot.

It has 1 volume pot and a 3 way toggle switch right now. The Mustaines call for 100k pots so I feel like it’s affecting the tone by not having the tone pot at all. Could I wire in a resistor to simulate a 100k tone pot?

Oh sorry. I overlooked the fact that you have actives. You can still bump down the single pot to a 50k maybe, or use a 50k resistor in series with a cap across the output jack. That method works well because it's easy to pull out the jack and solder a resistor and cap on. Yes, you could start with an 100k but I recommend starting with 50k because the result is more noticeable.

Duncan suggested a single 25k pot. Would that have the same effect as adding a tone pot? Sorry for the noob questions lol. Wiring I can do, the specs confuse me.

Yes, going from 100k to 25k vol should darken it noticeably. You might want to splurge and spend a whopping $25 on a 20 or 25k pot, 50k pot and a resistor and cap set.

Awesome thanks Clint. Hopefully one of those solves it. At least then I’ll know if it’s the missing pot or the pickups that I don’t like before I hack things apart [emoji23]

No prob! Sounds good. Yeah you should be able to dial in the eq for your 1 pot slot guitar no prob.

Re: Add tone pot to Schecter KM6?

What cap value should I use? This is what my diagram looks like now. If I choose a 1 vol, 1 tone it specifies a .047 cap. I'm guessing I go with that?

Re: Add tone pot to Schecter KM6?

Would I solder the cap and resistor in-line with the ground, then? Do they have to be in a certain order? (Output jack ground > cap > resistor > ground wire)? Sorry, never done this before, just looking at the diagrams and trying to figure it out.

Re: Add tone pot to Schecter KM6?

What worked for me was jack hot lug > 50k resistor > 22nf cap > jack ground lug.

Re: Add tone pot to Schecter KM6?

Concentric pot wouldn't require any other holes

Re: Add tone pot to Schecter KM6?

A better idea is to buy a mini 100K pot and leave it in the cavity, connect it a normal tone pot as per the diagram, and then be able to make adjustments to your liking. Maybe not at the tip of your fingers but easier than de-solder/experiment/solder.
I had the original livewires and did some similar mod to tame the output of the metal livewire. (still didn't like it)

Re: Add tone pot to Schecter KM6?

There was barely enough room to fit the battery in there, I thought I was going to have to get a battery box routed in but it just made it. If the Cap/Resistor thing works and I decide I don't hate this guitar I'll probably get it routed out to fit a more permanent solution. At least this allows me to hear it without destroying things.
