Adding a 2nd Cab: What happens to volume?

No effects

With amp settings remaining equal:

1. Does the overall volume go up, or does it just sound "bigger" or wider?

2. Does the volume of the first cab go down because you have introduced another cab?

Re: Adding a 2nd Cab: What happens to volume?

If the original cab was connected so that its impedance matched the amp, then you are getting all the power from the amp.

If you connect the two cabs so that the combined impedance matches the amp, then the total power is the same and is shared between the two cabs.

Thus the power in the original cab is less.

If you screw up the impedances you will get less total power.

I'm not sure how loud the cabs will be together. But your volume will increase. Your pushing more air.

Re: Adding a 2nd Cab: What happens to volume?

I would think that the physical load given by the amp would not change due to 2 output devices. Merely the load is split/ spread better! This may give the impression of being louder. Im not too sure, any1 else?!

Re: Adding a 2nd Cab: What happens to volume?

Whenever you double the number of speakers, you get another +3db in volume. So if you expanded a 1x12 to a 2x12, you'd get 3 more db. same from 2x12 to 4x12. from a 4x12 to a full stack, you dont get it, it has to do with phase cancellation and how long it takes the sound to reach your ear, but it will sound bigger.

Re: Adding a 2nd Cab: What happens to volume?

Going from a half to a full stack isn't really that much louder, but it does sound like "more".

Best way I can describe it.

I'm not to sure about the 3d thing but...I do know this, adding speakers (assuming that you keep your impedencs correct) will have more "appearent loundess" due to increased wavefront
