adding a power amp to an amplifier....

i have a crate v1512, and i love the sound, but its too quiet for my tastes. I have a crazy scheme of of taking out the pre/power amp section and disconnecting the power amp tubes and making a little case for it. thus, making my own little pre amp. then i would buy a power amp thats loud enough and add it to my pre amp. would that work? it seems to far fetched, but is there any way i can go about doing this?

yes it can be done, but i wouldnt do it. have you worked on pc board tube amps before?

no. no i have not. but i honestlly dont mind doing the tech work.

but its my only amp and i dont wanna ruin it...

Does it have an effects loop or a preamp out jack?

It would be far easier to add a line out (if it doesn't already have one) to drive an additional power amp, rather than piecing in a different power amp. That way, you can dial in the tone you want on the small amp, then add as much volume as you need by setting the level on the power amp.

You'll just destroy the amp......believe me, you will.

My first suggestion is to list the amp for sale, and save up money at the same time. When it sells, go amp shopping.

Second suggestion, if the amp has a line out or FX loop. Find another amp with an FX loop. Plug the line out on your amp into the power amp IN on the other amp. All the tone and controls will be on amp #1. The second will just be utilizing it's power and speaker. Make sure there's a speaker attached on both amps though.

i was thinking that would be a problem, because its a really basic amp.

but i wouldnt be against adding a line out

anyone know how to go about doing that?

Just save up for a real amp man...you're making everything a lot more complicated than it has to be.
