adding neck binding after the fact

Re: adding neck binding after the fact

I think this would be the best option considering cost and that it is a SG Faded (not at all knocking the guitar, just saying to go through the expense of adding binding is like putting Platinum Rims on a $500 beater car...)

I've done that on a tele body with some success.... But if you hands are constantly rubbing against the body, it would peel off in no time at all...

I was doing some research to see if anyone ever actually tried this... Replied before I checked the dates...

I would still like to see you knock off a fret board and not bugger up the finish. It takes a bit to replace a fret board.

I realize I am reviving an old thread.

I have a question about this. Couldn't you make a 90 degree file with the top flat portion being just wood or something that is not abrasive. Then have a file that is only a few mm in depth so that you can just file off the fret ends without requiring to take off the fret board? Then just heat up the remaining bits of binding, remove and then re-apply your own binding?

Re: adding neck binding after the fact

I've had a couple cheap-ish guitars with PAINTED ON "binding"... (a Hofner, a couple of Harmonys and a... Teisco-ish MIJ thing.) More than a couple feet away, you'd never tell it wasn't paint (except for the Teisco, where all the finish wore off the edges)
