I haven't ever found that masking or painters tape leaves a residue on my bobbins, but that may be brand dependent and I've just been lucky with my brands. Certainly electrical tape will leave residue. I like it for that little extra thickness and soft texture it has; like it might compress when putting the cover on and expand a bit if there was any small air pockets. Next time I put covers on something, I'm going to try it on the inside of the cover.

I put some covers on mine today in fact. Lined the inside of the cover with masking tape, brought the screws up a tad to fit in the holes alittle better, and that was it. Didn't even bother to solder the covers. They were a nice snug fit and look great.

I'm thinking of doing the same but can't decide between two ideas:
1. Putting a strip of electrical tape on the inside of the pickup cover over where the slug coil would sit, and then putting double sided tape over the slug coil. Then C-clamp the puckup on tight and solder OR
2. Melting some wax (in a pot, until the wax has some viscosity but not much hotter) then dipping the cover in, wait a few seconds, then secure the pickup in with a C-clamp, place in freezer for 15min or so before soldering.
