Adjusting a JB pickup

Hello everyone, I have an Edwards(ESP) Les Paul with a jazz in the neck and a JB in the bridge. The neck sounds fine but the bridge is just WAY too much for my ears. Its sounds like every single frequency maxed out, like the pickup is gonna explode if any more juice is put in it.

Are there any suggestions for smoothening out tone such a raising one side and lowering the other side of the pickup (inch/mm please) at an angle, or pole piece adjustments?

Appreciate it.

Re: Adjusting a JB pickup

Try lowering the entire pickup. If you like the tone better with the volume at 7 or 8, try a 250K pot which would give you about the same output on '10'.

Re: Adjusting a JB pickup

I hate to say it, but I think that's just the character of the JB. I like that sound, some do not, but I don't think that you will change it much no matter how you adjust it.

+1

You can take the edge off by lowering it or using 250K pots, but a JB is a JB.

Re: Adjusting a JB pickup

Well, lowering it might give you 'less', but I am also of the mindset that the JB sort of sounds this way, and that is why people like it. A magnet swap might help, or just get a lower output pickup like a 59.

Thought of it earlier but my fear is that a 250k pot might remove too much of the high frequencies, just a thought though

Changing the height's just not going to solve your problem, as that's the way the JB's supposed to sound. You best bet is to change the stock Alnico 5 magnet of the JB with an Un-Oriented Alnico 5 (UOA5).

Ten bucks, fifteen minutes is it's the first time you do it, and any primate with opposable thumbs can do it, specially with all the You Tube videos there are showing how to do it.

You can get your magnets from Addiction-FX.

I may be wrong here but I don’t think a 250K pot will change the output any....
It will shave off some high end for sure.
I have 250k pots in my LP and in my Kramer and I didn’t notice any change in output from the 500K pots that were in them prior.

I have a JB with a UOA5 and while it sounds good, it still sounds very much like a JB.
I agree with Mincer in that a 59 might be a better choice.

+1 change the pup... The Jbs upper mid spike is wonderful on guitars that need it, but sounds like your guitar already resonates in upper mids.

Re: Adjusting a JB pickup

In my experience, a JBs pretty much is what it is - its character persists.
I concur with the others who recommend going with a different pickup.

I have the same experience with my Black Winter in my PRS SE.

Re: Adjusting a JB pickup

Yeah, the JB sounds like a JB to me no matter what pots or what magnet is used.

Though I bet a neodymium JB could really be something special.
