advantages of a 2x12 over a 1x12?

Re: advantages of a 2x12 over a 1x12?

Depends, some 2x12's run in stereo which is cool. Generally they can sound a little fuller as well since you do have twice as much air moving but it doesn't make a huge difference.

More noticeable would be the extra cost, the extra size and the extra weight.

I'd suggest a 1x12 and the option to plug it into a 4x12 when you want to move more air

Re: advantages of a 2x12 over a 1x12?

no pair of speakers can be exactly the same -> more speakers sound better (not
just fuller) than a single one. 212 is a great solution imo.
besides 412 are unuseable heavy and huge, they tend to beam. in case i'd need it
louder i go for more 212cabs

Re: advantages of a 2x12 over a 1x12?

More empty space inside the cab means more bass.

Yep and that is a FACT!! I can't stand a 1/12 open back combo amps tone. It s small and boxie with no THUNP in the bottom. I also personally don't care for 2/12 open back cabs as they just don't seem to have any meat in the bottom end. Bigger is normally better as far as cabs are concerned!!
My late 80's staggered speaker Fender 2/12 actually has more bottom end THUMP than my 4/12 does!

Re: advantages of a 2x12 over a 1x12?

From what I hear, the difference is not just in volume, but there is a fullness to the sound when there are multiple speakers. I like 2x12s and 4x10s.

Unless your mic'ing your combo which sort of makes it a moot issue. Your just hauling more weight in that case.

What are you talking about? Are you saying that the only difference between a 1x12, 2x12, and a 4x10 cab is the weight when it comes to putting a microphone in front of it?

LOL . . . made me laugh !

Will a 2x12 not have a little better bass ?
I know a 4x12 has ALOT of extra bass, compared to a 1x12, so i can just assume that a 2x12 must at least have a wee bit more bass to it's tone, than a 1x12 - not so ?

ok lets some this up before i make my GC/SA bregade.

2x12's and 1x12's have issentially no difference?

ill only be using my amp for home use and small gigs

Ahhhh . . . is that so :scratchch

Is that why you get "OVERSIZE" cans in some of the amp brands lines ?
I always wondered why there is two diff size 2x12's ?
I thought it could be if you want to"up-grade" the 2x12 to a 2x15 or something !
Does this count for both open back & closed back cabs ?

What will the tonal diff be between a Marshall 2x12 (closed back) w. GREENBACK's & a 4x12 cab (closed back) BUT with ONLY 2x12 GREENBACK's in it ?

Personally, * I * would still go for the 2x12 !

Yup the bigger the cab, the more bass. For a 4x12 with only 2 speakers in it there will be more bass along as the other 2 speakers holes in the front are covered well.

GREAT - thanks ;)

Now i better go and look for one of those old 8x10 cabs, remove six of 'em, and nail those open holes wirh some prime Teak :scratchch

Does it matter which peakers i remove ?
Bottom ?
Top ?

So i rekon those BIG 2x12 Genz-Benz ported G-Flex cabs must have some serious BASS in 'em !

Re: advantages of a 2x12 over a 1x12?

I feel the 2 x 12 just pushes over a greater space.

It isn't that it's louder, but it just covers more of it without having to be as loud.

I gig with a 2 x 12 on the floor and a 1 x 12 at chest level and get good projection without blowing out ears.

Also the bigger the speakers used the more bass. If you want alot of bass go for 15" or 12" speakers. Small speakers project more treble.

So with that above statement in mind, here's another n00b question :

...can you "re-build" 18inch PA speakers into a guitar cab and get any good sound out of 'em ?

I mean, will this work :

Guitar > fx > amp head > 4x12 cab & 2x18 cab

Has it been done before or did i just come across a new format/idea ?
