Advice for SD Newbie

Hello all, this my first post as I have recently purchased a Jackson SL2H with a TB-4 in the bridge and a '59 in the neck. It's my first guitar with Seymour Duncans after using DiMarzios for so many years and I really love them. The TB-4 sounds awesome on the high strings (better than anything I've used in the past) but is a little loose on the bass strings. I was hoping for some recommendations on a SD pickup with similar performance on the high strings, but is alot tighter on the bass strings and with similar output. I play mostly hard stuff but am not interested in active pickups. Thanks for your help.

hey dude! whuttup?

Alder guitar, maple neck, right?

I have just fallen in love with the Full Shred. I haven't tried very many SDs, but I've tried several alder guitars including your model Jackson (if I'm thinking of the same guitar) with the JB in them (that's the TB-4, right? I'm sleepy) and I don't care for that arrangement. If it were me I'd try a Full Shred in it....But, again, I am blinded by love right now.

I played those and don't like the way the JB sounds in them either. The 59n is great though. I've been hearing good things about the Alt 8 pickup. That should give you tighter lows. +1 on the Full Shred. That pickup is tight and articulate.

Thanks for the suggestions. It is an alder body and maple neck. The following site also likes the Full SHred pickup very much and it does seem to be what I am looking for: http://www.shredaholic.com/shredpickups.html. I am leaning toward ordering it but my only concern is that the output is a little less than the JB, but I can probably live with.

Its not that much less honestly. And I think it'll be great in that guitar. You won't believe how tight its gonna be. The PATB-3 would work well as well. Same feel/sound...more low end...a touch more output.

Re: Advice for SD Newbie

I love my SL2H with the stock pickups, but if I had to swap, it would be for a Full Shred. I have a Full Shred pickup but just haven't loaded it into an axe yet. It won't go into the SL2H - that is perfect as is - but it will go into something shortly.

How does the Full Shred sound clean? Will it work well in a coil tap situation? I know I am asking for the world but verstality is good.

I can add that I rolled back the volume knob (on the RG2610Z I mention in that thread) when playing on the ubergain channel of a 5153 and got clean, but that is a warmish-darkish amp voicing. On clean channels voiced brighter, I still had to roll back the guitar volume to soften up the sound.

Re: Advice for SD Newbie

I think if you like the JB on the high strings, then the Alternative 8 might work well for you if you don't end up liking the full shred... However, it does get a lot of love, so I'm sure either one with tickle your goose.

Sweet!! I am that much closer to ordering it. Thanks so much.

This one is a monster with ALNICO 8s! It's got really thick mids and insane output. It's like an Evolution on steroids. :scared:I wouldn't mind trying this one out if the Full Shred doesn't pan out.

Welcome to the Forum bro!!!

1.Your Jackson is not Alder. It's Maple neck-thru with Alder wings. So your guitar is more "Maple" in character.
I would suggest you to check the PATB2 ,The Custom ,or the Fullshred.
Jacksons are allready tigh guitars (focused sound)..So a Fullshred would be overkill maybe and can change the tone to dull on higher strings.Custom would be better (Very close to Fullshred) on higher string!

The PATB2 will make your guitar a monster...If you put light top heavy bottom strings ,you will be in heaven!

The PATB2 is a good suggestion. It has a slightly less treble rating than the Full Shred or the JB but is definitely worth looking into. My guitar is not as bright sounding as the SL2H's I tried when I looking to buy and that is why I chose this particular one.
