Advice needed for Marshall Head

Hello everybody!!

Its time for me to buy my first tube amp HEAD and as a classic and 80s hard rocker, I want a Marshall sound :)

At the moment, I have a peavey classic 30 connected with a 2x12 engl vintage cab and a tonebone hot british distortion (lots of other gear multifx, fx, eq etc but are used on demand only), along with a fender HSS with seymour duncan JB and a washburn sb80 (les paul style) with SD custom 5.

Although it gets close to that distinct Marshall sound, I'm not entirely satisfied so I decided to get a Marshall amp head and I have come down to 3 amp choices (each one costing of about 1000€ here in Greece), the new Vintage Modern head, the DSL50 and the TSL60.

I'm looking for a 80s hard rock sound, with medium/ semi hi gain, and that distinct mid roar of Marshall amps. I have demoed the vintage modern amp and I like it (although a little bit on the vintage side), but only heard samples of the other two amps (and played through the podxt live’s amp emulation on the according amps if they have anything to do with the real ones) so no real contact with these amps. I can, and probably will also hear the TSL60 soon but at the moment I cannot find any dsl50 neither to demo or to buy, they have disappeared from the Greek market and as far as i can see most online stores also do not list it.

Which if these 3 amps (or 2 if dsl50 is not available for purchase) would you buy for 80s hard rock sound? I do not really care for many channels etc but more on sound quality and amp construction. On last, but important parameter is that I’m mostly a bedroom player, so amp cranking is not to be expected (but then again, sooner or later, I’ll buy a hot plate) therefore I want to sound as good as possible even on low volumes.

Thank you very much for your answers!!
Stelios.

From your emphasis on 80's - none really, and I played metal for 2 years on DSL50, nope, you need JCM800 ... maybe JCM900.

Unfortunatelly, both 800 and 900 series are far more expensive here in Greece (about 600+ euros more for a 800) and neither can be found on stock, so long wainting times are to be expected! :(

So I'm pretty limited on either VM or TSL60 and if it becomes available a DSL50!

Again thank you for your answer!

Well some people are gonna vomit here after hearing it again here from me, but try my amp, Laney AOR, it is a monster, most of the people will say its JCM800 on steroids, I dont agree, but it can be a total JCM800 with EQ infront or in the loop to bring more of t hose marshallesque piercing highs(sorry) but it has enough gain in the pre-amp by itself to do any of the eighties pushed JCM800 crunches. You will save so much money for other gear that you will be really happy. Its build like a tank and no diode clipping too. Don't take my word for it, ask guys at PlexiPalace, Les Paul forum, and guys here.

Re: Advice needed for Marshall Head

For 80's rock tones, I'd look for the amp those guys used: I'd look for a used 1982 or 83 JCM-800 50 watt head or combo amp with just a single channel and vertically mounted inputs. Those sound the best to me. The ones made a few years later have side by side inputs and don't sound quite as good.

I'd stay away from the two channel, channel switching JCM-800's with reverb...not as organic a sound, IMO.

If you need channel switching, I'd still get the single channel model and use a Boss DS-1 or Tubescreamer pedal or whatever overdrive pedal you prefer.

There's a couple of 50 watt combos on Ebay right now. You can see the diff between vertical inputs and side by side inputs too. Just go to ebay and do a search for Marshall JCM 800. Like I said, I MUCH prefer the older vertical input version...better tone. Lew

Too bad a Splawn would be so difficult to get there. You could buy a 50 watter like mine and be done with it (arguably cheaper, too, but definitely better built).

I've heard good things about the VM's master volume and that the low volume tones are pretty good. Haven't tried one myself.

Thank you all for your answers!!

Yes i know about the 800 and the Laney AOR (and Splawn of course), but the problem is that here in Greece none can be found or in the case of a reissue 800 the price is way out of my budget and at this time ebay is not an option :(

I have heard the VM and it was good and with a boost (in the store we used a VS route 66 as a a clean boost) it got hair in its sound but i thought the dsl/tsl that might be better for 80s rock this is why i'm asking! :)

Is the TSL60 the same as TSL100? (as the 100 watt is more expensive about 300 euros), because i head that the tsl100 has the same circuit with the dsl series and the the tsl60 has an entirely different one and thus different sound!

Thank you again very much for your answers!!
