I do like the Traynors I've seen, but I'm always worried my patriotism (yep, Guitarstv, we are countrymen!) might be blinding me to their deficiencies!!

I happen to disagree. I think it's a plenty useable drive channel, especially on the HRDx IIIs with the new speaker. It of course has more gain than most standard fenders. Have you ever cranked master on the drive channel past 4? There's a ton of gain on tap as far as fenders go, some of it is pretty muddy at the upper limits, but there's plenty useable for hard rock, punk rock, heavy blues, that stuff.
The vox has more gain at lower volumes but I'll be damned if the HRDx doesn't straight-up have more gain available than a stock AC15. That "more drive" feature will get you saturated way quick if you're playing at volume.
Mark III Simul-Class combo, with reverb and EQ
F-30 or F-50 series
Maverick
DC-3 or DC-5
Nomad 45 or 55
Rocket 44
The new Express 5:25 or 5:50 would work, but are out of your price range--probably even for used.
The Boogie .50 Caliber is also a good amp, but they can be more difficult to set up for clean AND high gain tones. Great for recording though; but they don't have as many options as the Mark III. I prefer the Mark III over the Mark IIB; and IICs are hard to find and expensive.
But the 112 combos I listed above are really good amps and would probably come under your budget.

+20 on the El Diablo: amazingly versatile amp (anything from ultra-clean (very sweet) to crunch, to marshall gain to brutal metal gainy stuff). Takes a while to dial in perfectly but they sound amazing. Worth a lot new but can be had for very little money used (bought mine under 500$ on ebay).
