I am selling a Kustom hybrid amp 12 watts brand new for 130.00 bucks.I have a guy interested and wants to trade me a Fender 1981 Starcaster hard tail strat with 69 custom fender pickups single coils black and white. Should I do it, or take the money instead? I do have three guitars and one is a Peavey strat with SD pickups already, but whats another guitar to make it 4 lol.Not sure what to do?? What would you guys do??

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

I'd do it for the pickups alone, a vintage strat on top of it that you could flip for $500 easy.....umm yeah!

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

How much do you like teh amp?

More guitar experience, prolly be pleasantly surprised.

'81's a pretty safe year!

I don't think they made a Starcaster in 81 but i could be wrong...

If you don't want the amp and would like a guitar.... go for it. I would rather have a spare amp but i have like 12 guitars and only like 6 real amps so maybe I'm biased.

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

Oops I thought it said Stratocaster... Disregard my previous post... I know nothing of starcasters value.

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

Starcasters are those cheap things they used to throw in starter packs before Squire
the Kustom amp was like $100 new right?
if you want the Pickups
heck, if you want the guitar
take it

I don't think I would

see if he has the rest of the starter pack
make him throw in his strap and some picks

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

A Fender Starcaster is a CBS era, offset waist, semi-hollow with Wide Range humbucking pickups. This design was re-issued in recent years in MIC form with thinly disguised non-FWR pickups.

The Squier Starcaster is a budget hardtail Stratocaster style guitar, even cheaper than the Y series and Affinity series MIC.

There was an import guitar from the early Eighties that called itself a Starcaster. It had star inlays before Sambora! This guitar was not from the Fender group of brands.

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

The amp was 150.But yeah with electronic upgrades pots he said and the 69 custom pickups that would about cover the amp.

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

I suggest that you verify that the pickups in the trade guitar are as described.

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

What guitar are we talking about after all? If this is indeed a FENDER and not a budget variant, I'd do it.

If it is a hardtail Starcaster it should look like this:

From Seymour Duncan's blog "Offset Guitars: My Selected Bunch!"

The Fender Starcaster

The Starcaster was released a decade after the Coronadod and suffered a similar fate: unpopular at first but it grew on the public later on. This full maple thinline hollow body had Fender’s Wider Range humbuckers (which were also loaded in the Fender Telecaster Deluxe and Custom). Perhaps the Starcaster’s ill-fated history was in part due to the public image of fender: thin solidbody electrics with single coils. Because the sound was to die for. At least, in my opinion. It’s got the chime and sparkle I want in a Fender but it’s got beef, low end girth and woodyness that I also want in a semi hollow. Thankfully I’m not alone since Fender reissued this amazing guitar in 2013 as well, next to the Coronado. Perhaps it isn’t as true to the vintage specs as some of us want it to be, but with some tinkering at home and some Seymour Duncan Custom Shop love I’m sure we can get those new guitars to sound just like their vintage counterparts. Let’s listen to an oldie, so we know what we’re working towards!

I would do it in a heartbeat if it is in good condition.

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

Yeah thats what Im gonna do thats part of the only reason I would do it

Re: Advice on an amp trade for a guitar

The original Fender Starcaster was an interesting idea, poorly realised.
