Advice on buying a Les Paul

Re: Advice on buying a Les Paul

Just to add my two cents, my latest Gibson I just bought brand new I got for under 2 grand. Good deals can be found if you look in the right places! Happy hunting.

Re: Advice on buying a Les Paul

I like push pull because I can look down and quickly see what it's set to. Having to hit a few notes to figure out what it's set to doesn't work for me live, especially if the settings are wrong. I've never had a problem with push pulls slipping. Not what that means exactly. They stay where I set them.

Re: Advice on buying a Les Paul

Grab an older used one off eBay, Reverb, or, better yet...CL where you can spend a little time looking and negotiating and save some money while getting a good deal on a guitar you pick after you've actually had your hands on it playing and inspecting it.

Re: Advice on buying a Les Paul

There is a guy in Russia on Reverb that took a Gibson Les Paul Studio Goth Morte (which I designed for Gibson), but he added binding to the whole thing along with a set of EMG's. He then refinished the headstock, but to me, that was a huge mistake because the Gibson logo is all wrong. But at $800 its really not a bad deal...

Re: Advice on buying a Les Paul

If you have me $2,000 I'd show up with the sickest Les Paul standard you could ever imagine.

That price is way too high man.

Re: Advice on buying a Les Paul

Yeah after some thought, I could probably get a new one for that price. I know some will say oh nooooes don't get a new one they are nothing like the old ones they are made of cardboard and candlewax, but seriously the new ones aren't all bad. I've played some sweet 2014s before. And I've only owned an Epiphone so it's like touching the Holy Grail ya know.

Anywhoo, the price is high, especially for it to be modified. People mod guitars and amps and put these little buttons on, or split the coils, or add pickups and they say, oh but this increases the value. Not necessarily true. I work at a car dealership and I'll say straight up that I see people bring in worn out vehicles with 20 inch rims thinking they'll get retail value on their vehicles, and they get hurt when we don't pay them out. Only 2 things I know of that appreciate in value, that's gold and guns. Cars and guitars don't seem to always work that when when they aren't original.

I think the most i'd pay for that would be $13-15. But now I'm sort of rethinking my strategy.

Re: Advice on buying a Les Paul

I just saw the 59/Custom demo on SD's FB page and holy cow! That pickup can do anything! It can metal, it can blues, and it can get in between. It's very touch sensitive, and I am told EMGs aren't touch sensitive or very dynamic, just one speed: GO.

Not sure if these EMGs are the same as your typical 81/85 but now I'm thinking going active might be more of a pain than I'm willing to go with.

Can I get a shout out from my Active users? Anyone have both in a Les Paul? Do they get dynamic on a one channel amp or nah?
