Advice on restoring 61 LP/SG

Folks-
You have been very helpful on some of my projects in the past and would appreciate advice regarding the biggest project I would ever be involved in, but wouldn't want to do myself- I would appreciate any thoughts or direction as I'm in no hurry and want to do this right when I do it-

My main guitar in the 70s and 80s is what I believe is a refinished 61LP special- I say beleive because the serieal number is only partially readable as a result of the refinish-

Photo links that follow aren't very good, but here's what was done to it (before I bought it)
1. P90s rerouted for dimarzio pafs
2. Vibrato tail piece replaced with a badass
3. tuners replaced with grovers
4. Painted black (finish has not held up well)- As far as I can tell almost all specials were heritage cherry except a very polaris whites-
5. "Les Paul" is a decal on top of the finsih

These mods made this a great playing guitar, but completely devalued it as a collectors item- I also play wide 25.5 necks these days so I doubt I will do more than play slide on it any time soon-

With that background, what would you do with it, assuming i will probalby keep if for sentimental reasons? Heres some thoughts-

1. Complete rebuild to original specs- This would be really expensive and assuming it had an original cherry red finish, really hard to cover up cavity repairs. I'm guessing this just doesn't make any sense, or might it have more value and cost less than I am guessing.

2. Rebuild the 61 special as a 68 special- The batwing pickgaurd would hide the rout issues with the refinish, and as long as I can get original hardware at a decent price, I would think this would be affordable- But would it devalue it even more, or increase it's value?

3. Keep it like it is? As I said, it's one heck of a playing guitar but no longer has historical value-

Any ideas or direction on who I might want to talk to would be really appreciated!

Do you want to restore it to sell it? If not, I'd keep it the way it is myself. I have a 71 SG Standard and it was custom painted ala Clapton's SG and pretty much lost all of its historic value.

Personally, if you like how it plays and sounds right now, then I'd keep it the way it is.

I would take it up to the 68 specs...that's my personal opinion but I think that's the best route...go with the pickguard to cover up issues and get whatever pickups you want to put into it. should be a killer slide guitar ala Derek Trucks

Re: Advice on restoring 61 LP/SG

Can you put up some pics of the whole guitar?

I'm wondering what the finish on the neck & the rest of the body looks like, especially the back. If it's super-trashed you could have it sprayed at a bike shop after all the holes & stuff are plugged. Maybe strip it & go natural...depends on what kind of shape the whole package is in.

Re: Advice on restoring 61 LP/SG

I wouldn't "restore" it to any specs. And I especially wouldn't try to make it into something that it's not.

1. Keep the humbuckers. Those are some big ol' holes to plug. But a good set of pickup rings would do that guitar justice.

2. See if the guitar will intonate with an aluminum "lightning bar" wraparound tailpiece. If it does, go with that- otherwise the Badass or the Schaller 455 are great intonable bridges.

3. Leave the Grovers. The holes are already reamed, they'd have to be filled.

4. Refin it if you like.

5. Is the Les Paul logo original? They used to just screen it over the clear coat.

What's great about a guitar in this condition is that you can make it what you like, and still have the feel and history of an old guitar. My Jazz Bass was really, really badly refinished a walnut stain complete with brushmarks in the lacquer. It tells a story about the bass and the hippie ass life it led.

Re: Advice on restoring 61 LP/SG

jmoose- ill shoot some more tomorrow- lots of nicks all over, classic output finish crack-
bluesguy- i will definately keep it-
capo- agreed 100%- i use it for slide now and it screems
Golden- that sounds like the best of all worlds- as far as the logo I think it's a decal because I think the headstock was refinsihed as well-

Thanks all!
