after 2 failed attempts from the trading post..

Re: after 2 failed attempts from the trading post..

When you are playing Martins also test drive a few Taylors. They both have great offerings in the same price range, but each brand has their own distinctive tone. I like the sound of the Taylors myself, but it's certainly a matter of individual preference. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

True that.

Don't forget to try a few Gibsons along with that. I know I'm a fanboy of Gibson acoustics, but a good Hummingbird or a J45 can go a long way.....

Re: after 2 failed attempts from the trading post..

If this is still a bit of a "last hurrah", I'd be thinking Martin, or one of the other fine acoustics suggested earlier. The reason is that you may find the expense more difficult as you get into family life.

Having already purchased the Martin, you still may quite able to purchase a nice Studio version of a Fb or LP even in a higher expense environment.

I also agree with an earlier post re a Martin (or other quality acoustc) being a lifetime type of guitar.

Re: after 2 failed attempts from the trading post..

I have a slew of guitars
and over the years I went thru a few periods where I didnt play at all
I have fell on hard times and sold some
loaned some out
but if my house caught on fire
my Martin 000CE1 would be the only one I would grab
and it never crosses my mind to loan or sell it

and apparently changing the strings on it doesn't cross my mind either
dangit

IMO, you are always taking a huge risk when doing mail order from somebody you don't know such as E-Bay or from here. My advice would be either go to your local Craig's List, where you can meet the seller in person and actually try out the guitar.

Or go to your local Mom & Pop dealer or Guitar Center and see what they have in stock. If that doesn't work, then order online from a reputable vendor such as Musician's Friend or Sweetwater. Sweetwater I would highly reccomend because they put their guitars through a thorough setup before they're shipped out.

Re: after 2 failed attempts from the trading post..

If you want a Les Paul why not go for a studio? I played a few at the guitar shop and loved it...
I dig the simplicity and both pickups combos I tried were really nice! I favoured the burstbuckers over the 490/498 but both sounded really good!

If not then the Martin acoustic! Their acoustics are to die for!

Just my inexperienced 2 cents

Re: after 2 failed attempts from the trading post..

I've got a Firebird V from 2007. Excellent! Great quality, super tone (bright and clear but with some body). The FB is one of the better quality later Gibsons IMO. If you want something unique, the FB is the way to go. But it does tend to neck-dive. It has an unusual feel to it that takes getting used to. I love the classic look of the banjo tuners, but they're not so great...difficult to fine tune, and they are heavy, adding to an already heavy neck. If you decide to go the FB route, stick with the real thing...much better than a studio model.

But, IMO you'd be better off with the LP, it's a much more versatile guitar. Kudos to the suggestion of a studio LP. IMO you get much more instrument in a studio LP than a standard (and at less than half the price).
