After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

I used to be pretty happy with my current level but the past week I've actually realized I have A LOT of flaws. My legato sucks and is far from smooth, I can't pick for **** and all I know of theory are the major modes and the Pentatonics. I can't even play the intro to Paradise city or the clean bit in Master of Puppets, though I never spent more than 30 minutes on it to be honest.
I've never had proper lessons though. Well I had 2 of one hour each about 4 months ago, otherwise I use the Internet and tabs a lot so I don't really count myself as self taught.
Either way... if you started playing rock stuff like me, what were you playing after about two years?

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

you got way more skill than i had, when i was playing for 2 years.

if you want to, i can send you the gilbert vids. they are a TON of help.. you just have to take them easy.

it's not just for shred stuff, but general playing aswell

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

after two years i was pretty conversant with all the open chords for strumming beatles tunes, i also knew 2 barre chords (root on 6th string and root on 5th string) for every major, minor, minor 7th, major 7th, and dominant 7th chord ... i knew the major scale in 3 positions and how to connect them and how to 'reuse' them as minor scales ... and i knew the minor (blues) pentatonic scale in two positions and how to connect them ... as for tunes, i could play 'stairway to heaven' pretty well all the way through ... i could play the intro lick to 'spirit of radio' by rush but not the solo ... i could mostly play the solo to 'fly by night' ... i knew a lot of the licks to the end solo from the live version of 'freebird' but couldnt play the whole thing through ... i hadnt learned any good jazz chords yet ...

I wish I knew why after nearly 10 years of playing, I still sound like I've been playing for 2.

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

I was playing AC/DC, Kiss, and Ted Nugent stuff after two years with a guitar.....and Wipeout. ;)

Right on, I'm the same way

I could care less about complexity so I don't do it :D People can "train" themselves on whatever they want, I just prefer playing whatever pops into my head.

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

After 2 years I could play 90% of Black Sabbath without solo's. I could also play the whole Cult album "Sonic Temple", and the whole Queenryche "Operation Mindcrime" without solos. I really haven't grown much since then.

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

I can play Empire with solo by Queensryche..

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

Well, I started with classical. I could play all the major, minor, 7th, sus2 and sus4 chords all over the neck. (yeah my teahcer was good).
And fingerstyle classical pieces. Not too complex, up to grade 5 stuff the most.
Electric, the first thing I learned was the solo of strairway to heaven. I practiced that thing for months maybe. It was not absolutely perfect, but it was the first one. I knew the intro and chords already. I knew some catchy easy riffs of my favourite songs and some (2 or 3) easy solos I picked out. Oh, and the minor pentatonic scale.

Well, I haven't made that much progress since then!

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

Mhmm I can downpick the whole of the main Master of Puppets riffs... I used to know a mean battery too but that was months ago...

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

I was also playing a lot of Accept and Scorpions at that time.

After 2 years? I was mostly playing Pantera and Korn.

That was 9 years ago. :laugh2:

Year One: Plugged my younger brother's P.O.S. garage sale electric into the Aux input of my boombox and tried to play along with Run-DMC and Aerosmith.

Year Two: Same guitar, but no boombox or amp. Tried to play along with Dweezil Zappa's version of "Wipeout" on the 'Back to the Beach' soundtrack. Learned to fake my way through most of Metallica's 'And Justice For All' album.

Year Three: Bought an acoustic.

Years Four - Present: Meh.

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

I learned more in the first two years than I did in the subsequent 13 years, that's for sure. Was I as good then as I am now? Not even close, but I was definitely not a beginner.

After 2 years, I knew most of the chord shapes for major, minor, and major 7th chords. I could do major and minor scales in almost every key, including major and minor pentatonics. I knew enough theory to know which scales belong with which chords even if I didn't know how to play all of the scales or chords (somehow I forgot a lot of that info). I had most simple picking and fingering techniques down, and I could improv a solo over a standard 12 bar blues with very good results. I was even pretty good with a wah pedal.

Hmm... I think two years in, I was playing Metallica and trying to figure out how the hell Hammett did the weedley weedley bits in Am I Evil! :D I didn't know and still don't know cr4p about nifty chord theory or whatever.

You probably are OK. Just keep trying to learn as many songs as possible, to get new licks and riffs into your licktionary. Your technique will grow and you won't even notice!

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

Same i'm playing now, 3 chords and the truth.

Re: After 2 years in rock, what were you playing?

Anthrax ,Megadeth and Pantera licks mostly.
It was the time wich i decided to concentrate on Pinch Harnonics and speed control. And begun to play some small melodies and lead parts.
