i have a gig tonight and it seems like the tube socket on one of my amps i was going to use is messed up. the amp works for the most part but once hot it seems like the tube gets loose and doesnt make good contact with some of the pins. the socket is pretty worn from tube substitution, is there a way to tighten up the individual pin holders? am i just a crackhead and i should replace the socket?

Jeremy, spray a little contact cleaner into the socket and then put the tube back in and wiggle it around and push it in and out a dozen times or so and see if that clears up the problem. If it doesn't, you can retension the individual pin holders. You could do it with some kind of sharp but stiff probe like a really thick and stiff needle or dentist's probe or something similar. You might have to remove the chassis to get at it. Needless to say, make sure the amp in unplugged and the filter caps are discharged first! Lew

Re: ahhh help!

i tried the contact cleaner last night and it didnt really help, ill try the pin holders

Re: ahhh help!

I think replacing the socket will probably be easier and more reliable that trying to repair one...

Re: ahhh help!

if i had a socket laying around i would probably just put it in as i still have a few hours, but of course i just used my last two trying to put a preamp in some old hammond power amp which should be cool if i can get it to work. so i am without and finding a similar one on a sunday is more work than i am willing to put forth :)
