B Bent's 5E3 is burning in. They say those SoZo caps take 100 hours to properly break in, but I'm not too sure of that. I'll put 72 hours on them before I ship, have to have faith that they'll just get sweeter.

Side note: I really dig those JJ 6V6 power tubes. I tried this amp with a pair of russian 6V6 and a NOS pair of Brimar's. The JJ's are much closer to the Brimars than the Sovtek's.

Okay, next up, that Matchless clone C-30 head... (Dierdre 30)

     I can't wait to get started on this one.

Cool deal...as soon as that puppy gets here we're going head to head with the Deluxe and my Super!

Scott, in your opinion are the sozo's worth all the hype?

Re: Aislinn 6V6 for B BEnt complete, Dierdre 30 is next

Sozo's..... dude, I'm not really sure. My problem is that I've never kept an amp that had them for more than 48-72 hours burn in time. They say they need to burn in for 100 hours.

But, they're made in the USA and the guy ships my parts so as they arrive in 2-3 days every time. I'm probably going to use SoZos from here on out just because of the hype alone.

B Bent will get to brag to you that ya, man, my amp has SoZo's. Not sure if it's worth the hype, but they're not that much more expensive than mallory 150's.

B Bent is providing his own speaker and that's a key component. I'm not sure what he's choosing. I'd put a Texas Heat in there or one of those Mojo American series jensen clones. In fact, I ordered one of those Mojo's so as to test it out in this amp.

Your circuit and his are really different.

What tubes did you end up running in yours?

This one has JJ 6V6's, a Sovteck 5Y3, JJ 12AX7 in V2, and I'm shipping it with a 12AX7 and an EH 12AY7 for V1. That way he can figure out which one he likes the best in that first spot.

I thought pretty hard about things like sozo's and other "more new" components but I decided that I wanted it to be as if I had gone back to 1951 and bought a V front Super with a very few exceptions.

Actually the 5B4 Super and the 5E3 Deluxe are not to far apart...I ended up with 3 NOS Tung Sol 6CS7's in the preamp, a NOS Sylvania 5U4G and a pair of NOS JAN Phillips 6L6WGB/5881.

I dig it...it's like a cleaner, louder Deluxe with two 10's and some extra old/funky/vintage goodness due to the big bottle pres.

Greg ended up getting a WeberVST Alnico 12 (12A125)...30 watt, light dope.

Greg is going to have to break that speaker in. I'm not sure if he'll go NOS on all his tubes or not. My goal is to build amps that sound fantastic on new production tubes.

Now, you're running 5881's in there? I thought it called for 6V6's?

I told him about the Weber break in time...I think it'll be worth it.

Greg's not much into the NOS tubes or the price! to be honest neither am I but I HAD to go NOS on the pre's so I figures...what the hell. Actually I had Bruce ship the amp with TAD 6L6's but I already had a set of the NOS JAN Phillips. As for the power tubes in the Super the circut calls for 5881's but I could run 6V6's if I wanted to...truth is even with the 6L6/5881's in it it still only puts out 18-22 watts or so.

So if by breaking it in, do you mean playing it?

Re: Aislinn 6V6 for B BEnt complete, Dierdre 30 is next

I would get too attached to the amps if I had that job.

By the way, how do those 5e3s do for Neil Young type massive distortion?

(I know that he used a deluxe, just don't know how a new one would do)

ALL new speakrs need to be broken in.

As for the Neil Young "tone" it can be had with a Tweed deluxe...he uses 6L6 in his but you'll get prtty damn close.

Yeah!! Usually UPS and Fedex takes 3 days to ship ground.

Dude, PM sent.

I've been playing the EJ Strat throught this SOB all day off and on. It's just a flippin' tone machine (as are most 5E3's.)

Kudos to Bruce at Mission Amps for teaching me how to make these amps quiet. Bruce is truly a sensei for a lot of guys in this business whether he knows it or not. He spends a lot of time on message boards helping so many people, giving of himself via the internet at all hours of the day, answering my stupid phone calls on occasion. I owe all my success to his patience through my first two amp builds. I tip my hat in his general direction. I hope a lot of you get to play and own an Aurora some day. I know next time I'm in Denver, I'm going to play the darn thing!
