Yeah, I think it is.

The pickups might be fine for that guitar. I agree that the wiring might be a mess, but it is most likely a PC board- you'd just have to attach the connectors to whatever pickups you'd get, but I bet it is just fine without a swap.

warren haynes used a 496r and pgb in a les paul in the early 90s and it sounded awesome so this might be a good pairing

I ran across a Gibson version in Ruby Red that was gorgeous, yet unavailable and EXPENSIVE.

agree!! I was going to look at new pups, but the wiring looks to be a nightmare...!

Yes, that is one way of doing it, but I prefer to keep the lead length when possible. But, definitely an option.

You can clip them a couple inches away from the pots (unless the control cavity is totally unworkable or you have a hollowbody, in which case you can cheat and clip in the pickup rout and solder there)
